From news24:

The 2013 Subaru Forester becomes the first vehicle to ace every aspect of the challenging small overlap front crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport earned an "acceptable". Receiving an overall rating of marginal was the BMW X1, Honda CR-V, two-door Jeep Wrangler, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and Volkswagen Tiguan. The lowest rating, poor, was awarded to the Buick Encore, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot and Kia Sportage.

IX35 and Sportage shares a great deal of engineering, so I would venture a guess the IX35 would also rate poor.

Pity they so bloody expensive

At R300K they're the cheapest 4x4 SUV I believe. And if you want to go off-road, they are one of the few that can actually do it. Not a luxury SUV (the interior is quite basic), but engineering wise it's a gem.

Cheapest is R330k for the 2.0l... So, not the cheapest, but with the new pricing on the XV, the cheapest 4x4 crossover does come from Subaru.

It's now the safest and by far the best bang for buck "compact" suv out there

In the US, the IX35 is branded as the Tucson. Information courtesy of the Hyundai product placement in The Walking Dead.
