Hi all,

So I know the steps to format a PC with a IDE hard drive, but now one of my friends has told me you DO need a floppy drive to format a PC with a SATA hard drive.

Is this true?

no... format them in exactly the same manner... preferably using the Disk management console under Adminstrative tools... and preferably with NTFS.... and tell your friend he is an ignoramus! :p

Yes and no

If the Chipset doesn't support a legacy SATA mode the drive will be inaccessible to dos-applications like windows setup without a driver disk for the sata controller. In windows if your sata controller has a working driver, format as per norm

Does anyone know what the transfer speed is on IDE?

I've heard SATA is 1,5GB/sec and it seems my brother may still have IDE. I want to change his HDD, but I'd also like to make sure it'll speed things up

SATA is 1.5Gbits/s, SATA II is 3Gbits/s, although actual transfer speed is usually limited the drive itself.

No.

1.5Gb/s = 150MB/s

So SATA has a theoretical max of either 300 or 150MB/s dependant on the version of the drive and controller

As for IDE
