Beijing - China executed two former vice-mayors from two booming eastern cities for taking millions of dollars in bribes, the Supreme Court and state media said on Tuesday, as the government strives to show it is being tough on graft.

Xu Maiyong, the former vice-mayor of Hangzhou, and Jiang Renjie, the former vice-mayor of Suzhou, were executed in the morning, the court said in a brief statement.

Imagine if it happened here - there would be no one left in gov't! :)

Damn I'm a psychic. I knew it was China before I even clicked on the thread.

Executing people who take bribes is great. Somehow, however, I doubt the Chinese are executing the right people. It's always easier to hide corruption, and create scapegoats, in a totalitarian society.

In the long run I reckon it works. The less politicians there are in the world, the better

Plus as a bribee, you never know when you might be next in the scapegoat line.

Like all politicians they are probably only executing for political expedience. No real important politicians were harmed during these executions;)

Even if these people really were guilty, no one deserves to lose their lives over something as silly as taking a bribe. Just shows you the mentality of the Chinese government and how cheap life is for them.

Wow. Just wow.

Lemme guess, you're also against executing murderers?

Even if these people really were guilty, no one deserves to lose their lives over something as silly as taking a bribe.

What if an official takes a bribe to allow a hospital to be built without complying with the building code, and said hospital later collapses and kills hundreds? What if an official takes a bribe to ignore shoddy housing construction, thus forcing millions of rands' worth of additional taxpayers' money to be wasted on bringing those houses up to spec?

As long as people continue to consider corruption a victimless crime, corruption will continue to be a massive problem.

Well done for jumping to conclusions. No.

As long as people continue to consider corruption a victimless crime, corruption will continue to be a massive problem.

There can't be a crime without an act of aggression and an actual victim in the first place. How exactly can you rationally and morally reconcile precognizant retribution; let alone retribution of death for something that did not result in death in the first place?

As Wildy has said: "They don't realise that they promote a system that encourages bribe taking, then when people do take bribes, think they deserve to be killed."

Good job china, other places around the world, especially here in Africa should take notes, corruption is killing the poor!
