Former world heavyweight boxing champion Gerrie Coetzee has been acquitted on a charge of failing to register himself as a dental technician, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

Cape Town magistrate Mogamad Esau reportedly found on Wednesday that there was insufficient evidence to convict Coetzee, 58, of practising dentistry without a permit.

According to the newspaper, the State had called a SA Dental Technicians' Council registrar, who testified that he had found no formal certificate showing Coetzee was a dental technician.

The defence said he was qualified but had lost his documentation.

Coetzee, nicknamed the "Bionic Hand", won the World Boxing Association title in 1983.

I don't get it.

They have no proof in the SA Dental Technicians records. HE (Coetzee) says he doesn't have proof (lost it).

Judge says fine... "insufficient evidence to convict".So there is no proof the he is (not) qualified? Someone should have a record if he qualified. If there is no record then he is NOT qualified...

But the thing is he wasn't making teeth he was just polishing it for a friend as a favour. There also wasn't any evidence that he was making false teeth and other prosthetics.

So the issue about his certification is a moot point.

Ok. Did not know the details. Thanks
