Former world heavyweight boxing champion Gerrie Coetzee has been acquitted on a charge of failing to register himself as a dental technician, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.
Cape Town magistrate Mogamad Esau reportedly found on Wednesday that there was insufficient evidence to convict Coetzee, 58, of practising dentistry without a permit.
According to the newspaper, the State had called a SA Dental Technicians' Council registrar, who testified that he had found no formal certificate showing Coetzee was a dental technician.
The defence said he was qualified but had lost his documentation.
Coetzee, nicknamed the "Bionic Hand", won the World Boxing Association title in 1983.
