Former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini has been arrested.

He was nabbed in his room at the university residence during the early hours of this morning.

It’s not yet clear why Dlamini has been arrested

Wits community newspaper, Wits Vuvuzela, says the arrest apparently has to do with an assault of a police officer.

Dlamini is reportedly being held at Cleveland police station and would be moved to Hillbrow police station.

EFF national chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu is reportedly consulting with Dlamini.

The police say the arrest of former president of the University of the Witwatersrand’s student representative council Mcebo Dlamini is linked to on-going investigations.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) can confirm that a 32-year-old male was arrested at a residence on the Wits University campus at about 01:00 this morning.

“The arrest was effected as part of on-going investigations into recent violence‚ criminality and acts of intimidation. Investigations continue‚” spokesperson Brigadier Sally de Beer said in a statement.

De Beer said the police do not reveal the identities of arrested persons until their first court appearance.

On Sunday morning‚ however‚ Economic Freedom Fighters national chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu‚ community newspaper Wits Vuvuzela and others confirmed on Twitter that the arrested man is Dlamini.

Mpofu consulted with Dlamini at the Cleveland Police Station where he is being held. After spending an hour with Dlamini‚ Mpofu tweeted “he’s OK” around 3am.

Not long after Dlamini’s arrest students gathered to march to Hillbrow Police Station where they believed he had been taken‚ Wits Vuvuzela said.

Students were expected to mobilise on Sunday morning and march to the police station where he is in custody.

Dlamini was arrested but soon released in clashes at the university earlier this month.

He made headlines last year when he took to Facebook to declare his admiration for Nazi Germany’s Adolf Hitler. Following this he was removed from his position as SRC president.

Wits University said it is aware that a student leader was arrested in the early hours of this morning at the Wits Junction Residence Complex.

“We do not know what the student has been charged with or when the student will appear in court. All queries should be directed to the SA Police Services‚” spokesperson Shirona Patel said.

What is more interesting is his son at Oxford, studying a Ph.D and who spectacularly failed to get the Rhodes statue removed at Oxford. His name is Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh.

WTF is the university allowing some old **** to stay in its res? The **** is not there studying, so what is he up to? He is just there to make **** for them and prey on the 1st year women.
They must be just as stupid as these protesters to allow this.

Section Nine of the Constitution of South Africa

(3) The state may not unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.

(4) No person may unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds in terms of subsection (3). National legislation must be enacted to prevent or prohibit unfair discrimination.

If someone 80yrs old wants to enrol at university & stay in res then that's none of your fscking business no matter how weird you or I might find it.

Nope, you are wrong.

Most universities (I personally know about Rhodes & UCT) tend to chuck students out of res after second year to make space for the youngsters. The only exceptions are usually res committee members, etc.

Having a 32 year old in res is unusual. And, dare I say, suspicious.

I don't think you understand exactly how UCT's res system works. They have different tiers of res for undergrad and postgrad students.

And to the comments regarding his age, I'm not sure why that's relevant to what he's studying. There are many here in their 30s and 40s still busy with degrees.

Sure, part-time and postgrad.

Nobody full-time and in res, that's positively weird.

And what is your axe, you trying to defend scumbags ?
