I want to set up my business that it can have child businesses under it. for example Like how Google inc (the umbrella) has Google search, Google android, Google mail, Google docs, Google plus etc etc all under one house.

I want to set it up in a way that It is possible to have different business partners and investors for each child business but still under one parent but at the same time operate differently. I need to know when I go to CIPC/CIPRO/DTI will I be able to set up such a company and can it be done online?

Also is there a South African business forum that I can rather go to for such problems?

What your talking about is a "Holding" company. The "Child" companies you're referring to are called the Subsidiaries

I know there are a lot of these companies selling shelf companies online.

I've never had any success with these shelf companies, so maybe someone who'd had some luck can point you in the right direction

They will sell you everything you need... About R1500 per registered company. Cheap as chips.

They will all be name something arb like "Silver Moon Trading 123 (Pty) Ltd". You will merely trade under a different name. Your main company(Holding Company) can then purchase a bunch of shell companies as above which will be your subsidiaries.

Why the need to go this route?

You would be surprised at how many Companies make up one brand... I am looking at my companies organogram on my wall and we are two holding with a spiders-web of about 52 Subs. And we are a team of only about 18 in one office :|

When you do follow the shelf company route - which is recommended - you make your main company the shareholder of the subsidiary companies.

I do think this is the easiest way to do this. but now wont I be at risk of buying a company with "baggage"?

I read this forum topic with a very weird face. I am finance, well endowed in finance and beyond the tax benefits of minorty and majority shareholding, certain assets being transferred between companies, and possibly having different business entities under an umbrella trading as different things I do not see the advantage of what you are looking to do.

You're starting a company, you have very little business(info that has been provided) you have not stipulated the possible different things you might sell or would like to seperate. Other than companies being registered as different types of business there is really no benefit whatsoever, just have different divisions within your organisation.

Obviously if one company is a service and another say an import service, sure split them as different trading entities but beyond that absolutely no real benefit(monetary) I can think of.
