Spoke to MyWireless support today, complained that it's easier to purchase a car than it is to get MyWireless service. I was told to wait a day or two as new unbundled packages would soon be available. Does anyone have more info about said packages?

Hi TrXtR,

Did you get the Ferrari powered by Telkom?

Capable of 350Kph, (restricted to 75 Kph due to the average width of the road in RSA) with a 300 Litre tank that can only be topped up at the end of month. However, provided you don't try to overtake busses, trucks or bicycles it should last you till then. It is equipped with specially shaped doors, so that only people that Telkom considers to be of appropriate size may enter the car, saving you the hassle of having to reject potential passengers. The constantly changing registration number, although it prevents you or your friends being able to find the car in a parking lot, is a security feature (Despite the fact that only Telkom can change the locks and any Telkom tech can copy your key) as it prevents any possibility of it being inadvertently used as a taxi. It also prevents you from getting a speeding ticket, but that was covered earlier as another example of Telkom going the extra mile (because their customers can't).

On the other hand, no one has been charged with drunk in charge of an Internet connection, I hope. Congrats on the new car.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Tasty

I could be wrong, but I think "unbundled" could mean that we'll soon be able to purchase the wireless modem upfront? [8)]
Anyone else has thoughts around this?

Cheers

I really hope so [:D], hopefully then the subscription would drop by at least R100...then maybe I could convince the wife we need broadband more than food [:p]

** How can Telkom claim to "Touch Tomorrow" when it can barely touch yesterday?
Because they're a BIG, GREEDY, MONOPOLY intent on keeping South Africa in the stone age. **

I wonder how much the modem will be. I don't see the point of dropping the subscription rates by R100 if the modem costs R3000 (speculation).

I don't really see the big deal with the contract. Its not like you can do anything else with the modem if you tell Sentech to sod off.

I would guess people dont want to be ripped off. ie. if the modem costs R1500 (they must have bought in bulk) and they charge you R100 a month for the modem then its a ripoff. Now who would know which portion is for the modem anyway.. Maybe they are making the modem reasonably priced to attract people..

I would like to rather see a 12 month contract with say a R500 purchase price for the modem. At least then if (by some miracle) SNO or something brings in 1Mbps for R500-R1000 you can jump to that otherwise you are stuck with sentech. That I dont mind, as long as they DO upgrade above 512Kbps and keep on getting more bandwidth and get to 90% coverage then its ok.

Haha, i have to agree here, i saw the car i wanted, i applied for finance and drove away in it within 4 days, Sentech first denied my application and the next thing i know 30 days later my modem is being sent, go figure. It'll be interesting too see the price of the modems in the unbundled packages and the prices for the service without the modems, these will probably be the prices we can expect once our 2 year contract is over.

This brings to think about my service with Vodacom trying to open an account.
I have always been a Pay as you go customer, but we bought a new car, the Opel Corsa 1.8 Executive which has a very nice built in cell phone kit. But in order to operate this phone you need the Sim Card in a credit card format and also you need twin call from vodacom. The problem is, in order to have twin call you have to have an account with vodacom.
Well Ok I thought. So I went to canal walk and asked for a plain simple For U Contract with no frills or phones as I have my own cell.
Well after 30 minutes of sales talk, I still was nowhere. All I wanted was a For U contract so I can use the twin call option. The guys were hell bent on selling me some other contract I didnt need. Ok, well thats sales talk.
The sales talk doesnt bother me to much as Im sure they are trying to make commission. But my long wait only started now. I had to fill in a helluva long application form. I had to give trade references. They even wanted 3 months of bank statements. I told the guy that would be about 50 pages and I also would never give him the info anyway. Oh but thats our policy etc he says. Well I own my own business and have accounts with many suppliers and have never had to fill in this type of forms for a mere cellphone account.
Well the whole episode took over a month and several phone calls.
When I bought our car, I walked in signed one piece of paper, the guys sent the car out next day for a valet etc and I took delivery about one day after signing for the car. That was service. Nice guys who aim to please.

Well only need to compare the motor industry to vodacom. The motor industry has stiff competition and therefore excellent service whereas vodacom owned 50% by telkom has 2 other competitors and most people use vodacom because it has the best coverage etc, but they need to brush up on their customer service. Perhaps they went to telkom for lessons.

I heard from someone that the modem was around R5000. If that is the case then it's not worth buying it as upgrading each time new improvements come out will be very costly. I would like to see the contract period shortend so that one can take advantage of the upgrades as they happen. Two years is a long time in this field. I would also like to know what Sentech is going to do with all the old modems after two years ? ... what have we done with all our 9600 & 24K modems ?? Just a though for those thinking of buying the Mywireless modems.

Ok and now how did Vodacom Get involved in all of this? there are no problems with VodacomSp, got my contract 3days later with my phone without filling out a single piece of paper or faxing a single document to them.. 1 phone call does it all....

BTTB :

I think the troubles you had with Vodacom are universal, I had the same kind of crap with MTN when I signed up. It makes me wonder if cellular providers just want everyone to go on the Pay-as-u-go plans as it's a lot less administrative hassle for them plus they're guaranteed payment (given that you pay in advance) [;)]

Back onto the topic of Sentech, the current modem is able to achieve speeds of 3mbps. Something tells me that we will not be exceeding that speed within the next few years (in terms of consumer broadband packages) so the contract length shouldn't be an issue. The only worry is that the network becomes over-saturated and you're stuck paying until your contract is up. I don't believe Sentech will let the bandwidth become an issue though as they are well aware that everyone will jump ship as soon as the contract is up.

Ok, Im sure most people get good service from their Mobile Company. Maybe my incident was isolated.
I was perfectly happy with pay as you go. But it was vodacom that insisted I need to sign up in order to get "Twincall". A feature where you can basically have 2 cells on one number, but the one chip in credit card format is in your car.
Perhaps vodacom has a lot of fraud and this is why they need documental proof etc.
But it lends me to think that they are not desperate enough for business. They have apparently 10mil customers and growing. Its possibly the model the state is trying to work on with Telkom. 2 to 4 operators in the market with "cartel like" pricing. Everyone making their bucks and the state coining the taxes.
Food for thought.

[:(!]Yep have to agree with you there took me like six weeks. They phoned me about 7 times every time requiring something new or asking for something that was allready send to be resend, I started loosing it after the last guy phoned, one more call from them and I would have told them to shove their internet up their arse. Im sure it must be easier to get Weapons of Mass Destruction then it is to finally get hold of your MyWireless modem.

And oh before I forget. It may have stood in the contract but after being six weeks down the line who knows. The courier finaly pitches up
at work I might add then ask for the orriginal contract, the one you signed faxed and e-mailed thru allready before he can give it to you. I was like WTF!!!! that information would have been usefull before I left home that morning. So after pissing me off for old times sake he phoned thru and they decided to give it to me.[V]
