Hi to all users,

Please use this forum to discuss any issues pertinant to deregulation of the telecommunications industry in South Africa...

I am hoping that this forum could become the public voice for individuals who have an interest in a deregulated South African telecommunications industry.

Lets show the powers that be that there is an informed public out there that have a RIGHT to DEMAND meaningfull change in this country...

Regards

I thought I'd just tell you something intresting I heard from a UCT employee the other day. Apperently UCT (universtiy of cape town) tried to solve their immense bandwidth troubles by trying to obtain an international satilite link. Telkom did not like this and managed somehow to prevent them from doing this...don't know exactly how. anyway last i heard UCT was planning some sort of court action. A bit off the topic but just to show that there are some big orginizations that telkoms been rubbing the wrong way. Its not just ADSL users who are unhappy![}:)]

kobie you just wouldn't believe it...

A few years ago I worked for Global One (an International ISP) - the then Minister of Telecommunications (Mr Jay Naidoo) gave G1 a concession to install their own satelite earth station (which still exists today located in Katherine Street Sandton). When Telkom found out they hit the roof - and after months of BS G1 had to SELL the earthstation to Telkom and then BUY the services back from Telkom!

There are many many individuals & organistions that are sick and tired of Telkom's monopoly and their heavy handed approach towards the industry - personally I cant wait for them to get what's coming to them....

Note: The story below is what I can recall and may contain incorrect or misunderstood information.

There is/was a link on the forums to a story involving Telkom and AT&T, a issuse whereby AT&T wanted to offer a service which Telkom was unwilling or unable to offer, Telkom however refused to supply the communication link to AT&T who reponded by laying a complaint with ICASA who ruled in favour of AT&T and ordered Telkom to supply the required link. After a period of waiting and non response from Telkom , AT&T are considering court action which may lead to fines or imprisonment for upper level Telkom directors, Telkom have responded by stating they are considering the matter (whats to consider they have been ordered to provide the link).

Feel welcome to correct any errata and provide the link.

... and here we sit 3 years later (look at 1st post date!!)...

...and still we are going to hear 'something' next week, next month, next not ever.

The stories on this thread are obscene. Yet another sign of a totally clueless government - and a totally rapacious, demonic beast that is completely out of control. With yet - zero interest from government - how this beast is destroying the country (telling uct what they can and cannot do!)

sick to death

/edit/ dude - those links are a year older than the thread!!!

How can there be so much mystery surrounding Telkom. Telkom is Iraq. Where is Saddham and how did he do it? Where the hell is our army to go fish him out of his pit! Damn, this would make an intersting story.

"<title censored>." - The Mastermind behind Telkom.

Well, maybe it wasn't concieved right from the start. But at least when they registered this number: 0800 07249
Who did that? Where? How? We all know why. How did it come to be.....

They're in a position to commit so much evil, it's not even funny. You know, they are sitting with a tap on every single worthwhile digital communication channel in this county. It's unthinkable that there's not someone or some Telkom Secret Service sitting, monitoring and tagging SA's data - keeping tabs on whats hot and what's not, and playing our economy for a fool, with the ultimate inside info on who's talking to who and doing what.

I bet there's enough legal ground to totally force a lot of Telkom doors open. Things that should be public knowledge, by law. Telkom should be the most humble member of a group like ISPA or something.... Are we all so damn blind and stupid. No this is not conspiracy theory.

Recently ICASA has invited anyone interested in a payTV licence to apply, with the number of licences to be awarded not apriori limited. Cant they do the same for access to international bandwith? This case clearly illustrate that there is a serious need to open the international bandwith market. A key player that may jump at this opportunity is MultiChoice - they already have the satelites and access to 1.3 million households and businesses. And anyone wishing to lay an undersea cable could lay one if they feel they have a business case for that. Then Vodacom/MTN/any ISP will have a choice of accessing the international market and prices should come down (or more probably, not increase for a long time)

But still the simplest way to liberalise the market and create a truly competitive telecoms market is to break Telkom up and simultaneously allow competition into the market. I.e. then theres competition in telecoms retail, wholesale, infrastructure, international bandwith etc. That way the new entrants have a chance to actually acquire market share.
