AMD is launching its new quad-core Opteron processor, promising superior speeds with less power consumption through more efficient energy usage. This processor has been a long time coming, and according to CNet the “quad-core Opteron chip, previously code-named Barcelona, was over a year in the making, and six months later than expected.”
According to the Seattle Times “AMD plans to incorporate the processor into its Opteron line of chips for data centers. Filmmaker George Lucas’ production company, Lucasfilm, is among the first customers.”
AMD is trailing Intel in the quad-core department. Intel has been selling its range of quad-core processors since November last year.
CNet points out that Intel chose an easier method of putting four processing cores together by simply packaging two dual-core chips together. “AMD took a different approach, integrating all four cores onto a single chip, with the belief that having all four cores together was a better fit for its architecture.”
Phenom, AMD’s quad-core processor for desktop computers, is in the pipeline and expected to be launched in December.

How old is this article? Barcelona has been released for years now, and Intel's first quad core was released ages ago.
