Four killed in Van Reenen's Pass crash

Four people were killed in an accident involving two cars and a truck on the N3 at Van Reenen's Pass on Monday, the KwaZulu-Natal community safety department said.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla apparently lost control of the car, side-swiped a Volvo, and crashed head-on into a truck, spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said in a statement.

The four died on the scene. Community safety MEC Willies Mchunu said he was concerned about the high number of fatal road accidents in the province recently.

"This is indeed a cause for concern, but it will not deter our efforts of rooting out all transgressions on our roads."

Came back via Van Reenen's pass on Sunday, I seriously couldn't believe how some people were driving. Had an X3 try and force me into oncoming traffic twice (he saw his arse both times though), and this while I'm fully loaded with friends and he's fully loaded with his family including small children.

IIRC there is a proposed N3 route that bypasses Van Reenen's Pass altogether? I would take that one even if I have to pay more to be honest.

Just before Van Reenen a truck brought both sides to halt doing a U turn after taking the wrong on ramp a few weeks ago.

There are actually few real accidents on our roads.
The majority of collisions are caused by reckless or negligent driving behaviour in my opinion.

That there is.... but I doubt we will see it happening anytime within the next 10 years.

I do Van Reenen's on a regular basis, stupidity reigns supreme going up and down there, especially amongst the truck drivers. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to jump on the brakes to avoid a collision because I've had one truck doing about 30/40 km's an hour pull out from behind another without indicating.
