Four Miners trapped on West Rand

Four mineworkers are trapped in a mine near Robertville on the West Rand, paramedics said on Monday.

"Paramedics and rescue workers are currently on the scene where a mine shaft apparently collapsed, trapping the workers," ER24 spokesman Christo Venter said.

"It is believed that the workers had been trapped for three days already but this stands to be confirmed."

He said paramedics could hear the trapped workers and were talking to them but could not reach them.

Emergency teams continue mine rescue

Efforts to rescue four mineworkers trapped in a mine near Robertville on the West Rand were continuing on Monday afternoon, paramedics said.

"The City of Johannesburg rescue team, fire-fighters and paramedics are still trying to get them out," ER24 spokesman Christo Venter said before 12.30pm.

The miners were trapped when a mine shaft apparently collapsed. They were expected to be removed after 1pm. The name of the mine was not known.

"It is believed that the workers had been trapped for three days already but this stands to be confirmed."

Earlier, Venter said paramedics could hear the trapped workers and were talking to them but could not reach them.

Four illegal miners rescued

Four illegal miners trapped in a mine near Robertville on the West Rand were rescued on Monday afternoon, paramedics said.

"Rescue workers managed to reach them safely and they were removed from where they were trapped for the past three days in the old mine," ER24 spokesman Christo Venter said.

"Fortunately none of the men sustained any injury and they were removed from the scene after being taken into custody."

The miners were trapped when a mine shaft apparently collapsed.

The name of the mine was not known.

Illegal mining is going to be a huge problem with many deeper gold shafts closing within next decade. These guys are lucky to be alive.
