A 17-year-old teenage boy was arrested for the rape of a four-year-old boy in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg, North West police said on Monday.
The boy was playing with his friends when the teenager allegedly grabbed him and raped him in full view of his friends on Thursday, Sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa said.
The four-year-old was then allegedly dragged into a dilapidated community hall where the teenager continued to rape him, Moiloa said.
The boy's friends reported the incident to their mothers.
The four-year-old's mother, accompanied by angry residents, arrived at the hall and allegedly found the teenager raping the boy.
The angry community members beat up the teenager before taking him to the local police station.
The 17-year-old was also accused of raping a 72-year-old woman in Itsoseng in 2011, Moiloa said.
North West premier Thandi Modise condemned the alleged rape of the four-year-old boy and the 72-year-old woman.
She was speaking at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of no violence against women, children and people with disabilities campaign on Sunday in Mahikeng.
Modise called on communities to work together to expose perpetrators of sexual violence against women and children.
"We cannot afford to have our communities living in fear and need to unite in action to name and shame perpetrators. Enough is enough," she said.
As the teenager was a minor, social workers needed to review the rape case before setting a date for him to appear in court, Moiloa said.
