The Flim and Publication Board (FPB) has published new draft industry codes and guidelines aimed at preventing online harm in South Africa.

The new regulations, which also aim to provide guidance for peer-to-peer content sharing in the country, are open for public comment until 8 September 2023.

The Flim and Publication Board (FPB) has published new draft industry codes and guidelines aimed at preventing online harm in South Africa.

The new regulations, which also aim to provide guidance for peer-to-peer content sharing in the country, are open for public comment until 8 September 2023.

It broadly describes harmful content as content that causes emotional, psychological or moral distress to a person, whether it be through a film, game, or publication through any on or offline medium, including through the Internet.

Are they going to ban everything that anyone finds upsetting? Will they ban the games where people rage because they lost?

Ultimately this sounds like the nonsense they posted about monitoring online content creators. I wouldn't be surprised in 99% of independent creators are just carrying on as normal, regardless of the FPB.

Well this does offer an avenue to flood them with reports every time the EFF and ANC FB pages post up any new video. Just flag it that its harmful to your mental and emotional health.

Having dealt with the FPB I can tell you now that there is no one in that building capable of fighting their way out of a paper bag.

This is just an attempt at censorship as far as I'm concerned. Things like "racism" and "hate speech" are becoming more subjective every day (overused).
