So I went for an eye test today ... came out and they didn't have frames I wanted :/

I asked the the lady if it was possible to simply buy other frames and bring them in - she said great. She said they'd make up the lens so long and I can bring the other frames. I walked out ....

But now that I'm checking frames online - surely they need the frames first?
What about the different shapes and sizes?! Don't they need to cut them to the frame or something?

Also - does medical aid split the cost? Can I just walk into any optometrist, choose empty frames and give them my medical aid number?

Yes they need to have the frames 1st, I don't know what that woman was thinking.

I'm not sure about buying separately but with my medical aid, nearly the whole amount for frames and lenses was covered with a small pay in for extras etc

"I asked the the lady if it was possible to simply buy other frames and bring them in" - yep they need them

Glasses come from savings, do you still have savings, if so, HOW, ARE YOU SINGLE, OMG, SAVINGS IN AUGUST!!..

err, I mean, If so, have the other place invoice you and claim the frames.

Savings in AUGUST! wow. you are a legend.

I BOW!

Depending on the prescription it is possible that they have to order the lenses from their wholesaler while you shop around for a frame. A standard lens (pre-fitting) is a round piece of glass/polymer, which is then shaped to the frame's dimensions.

So she could be correct.

PS. encrypted (above) is also correct in that you can buy your frame from another optometrist using your medical aid benefit. Expect a call from your MA afterwards :D
