France will block Huawei from using 5G location data

Huawei Technologies Co. won’t be allowed access to users’ location data even if its equipment is used in the roll out of France’s 5G network, according to the head of the French cyber security agency.

Guillaume Poupard said France is looking at ways to stop the Chinese tech giant’s gear being used in critical parts of the network where key data such as users’ locations and encryption keys are held.

Why would that even matter?

Its not like anyone supplying equipment gives a **** about what data it collects - thats for the network to use, not the hardware supplier.

Not something relevant at all imho.

From all my years in IT, many hardware vendors have their own analytic mechanisms, whether it to report or troubleshoot, but they sure are collecting. The question is whether the data stays on the appliance. This data is very valuable, pending on how it is being used.

Vendors shouldn't have access to those anyway. As for networks it's up to them what they collect.

To be fair, the US is almost certainly pressuring Europe over this. They have one big weapon that European countries want: intelligence.
Ironic. The biggest spy pressuring others over spying using its spying.

A couple of years ago a big Chinese brand called Hikvision was reportedly "hacked" and "people" used their network video recorders and IP cameras to mine cryptocurrencies.

Now, we're talking about a company with ~21% of the market share in CCTV equipment globally. That's hundreds and thousands of devices.

The same way that the state looking to subdue other states over owning nukes owns the most nukes.
