Look you will excuse this rant and rave session, but there are certain things that just get my goat, none more than a recent statement by Telkom's Russell Achterberg.

But before I get to grips with this post, allow me to introduce myself. I am a writer & a proudly South African Internet entrepreneur (although Telkom makes this an impossible profession) who has moved to Mexico to exercise my activism in a non restricted internet environment – but that’s a story for another day.

I have been quietly monitoring several sites including this one since their inception without so much as posting, but the article I just read over at IT web and syndicated here at myadsl HAS MY BLOOD BOILING!

Who is this intellectually challenged idiot who made the statement that and I quote…. (and that’s not a trick question)

“Telkom's view that Internet bandwidth connectivity has to be managed is correct even though it has been criticised for its stance. Several countries are now placing some sort of cap on their Internet connectivity after having left it unmanaged for several years. We have been heavily criticised for doing this from the start, but I think we have been vindicated."

Firstly the only entity that can possibly “vindicate” Telkom is the consumer, and if they think that we have accepted the “cap” on our internet, they had better prepare for a S$#$@#@ storm.

I cannot believe the arrogance of these guys, are they really that conceited that they believe they can “bundle” a “new service” (4 triple play) and resell to us separately what we should already have and then on top of it justify the current cap on our internet.

I am sorry as a South African I am tired of bending over and having Telkom ram their high priced, restricted service up my %$# and having the audacity to tell me that its reasonable.

Have we all lost the plot or what?

Thats nothing......To make triple play work they are going to force people to take up this ""New technology"" offer as they strip, shape cook F@ck and screw up the current Broadband?? system so You cannot enjoy the experience . So they hope we all will take up this so called new offer at a price+++ ?? of course and the main stream will then have ADSL1024 broadband to only receive e-mails and browse the internet HTTP pages with a cap big enough to only allow for that, for any thing else is stripped, shaped cooked F@cked and screwed up. I cannot even access or download from FTP sites as I can via my SAT link. Same for P2P. They befussel skype to not work. To do all this, which I am already entitled to, I have to pay more and I already pay over R1000 p/m to have e-mail and HTTP at Telkom defined broadband speeds .........Anything more than 56K dialup is Broadband for Telkom ....

Some additional Info...

One of the reasons I left SA in March of this year, is that I could not afford to do business from South Africa under the current pricing and more importantly under the current restrictions.

That was the first reason for my trip, but also and more importantly to experience what the rest of the world has to offer in telecommunications, as I am currently preparing to write a book on the South Africa’s telecommunications structure and the politics at play within this clandestine industry.

My first stop was Arizona in the USA, where I paid $64.00 a month for a 9 meg uncapped connection, in addition to that phone services are available at $15.00 per month with unlimited calling in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Call costs from the USA to South Africa via one of the VOIP services are running at $0.08 cents (R0.52) per minute – which is to say that it is cheaper for me to phone you from the USA than it is for you to phone your next door neighbour.

I am as we speak sitting in Baja-California, Mexico Just south of San Diego (75 miles) in what is predominately a third world country BUT, I have a DSL line 1 meg (true one meg with no port shaping) and routing through one exchange directly into a fibre backbone… gotta make you think!

I don’t know if the forum moderators can pick up on this message as I don’t want to break any forum rules, but I have just done a 25 page report on Mexico’s internet in comparison to that of South Africa and I am willing to make this available to anyone who would like to download it from my site- - very interesting stuff.

So If I can post a link or download instructions then, let me know!

Also I have given up on using skype to South Africa as the post shaping has made VOIP completely unusable as a reliable method of communication with South Africa.

Justin, welcome.

I am sure that RPM or the moderators would not mind you posting the link so please go ahead. The more amo we have in the fight with Telkom the better.

i fear that Telkom's response to being compared to Mexico would be that "We are not a third world country, we are something worse". And "Telkom cannot be compared to any other telecoms company, we are vastly superior in every way"

Please Justin, bring out that report :) i need a good read to get my blood boiling again.

Thanks Justin! Just registered as a user on your site, and downloaded the report! Amazing...

Ettubrute did you not have a problem downloading the reports?

I Went to reports sections, attempted downloads. Sometimes it's funny though, if I click on any of the 2 report links it asks me if I want to download index.php instead of the actual .zip files.

Anyway eventually, I download the zip files. (both 3gig and island reports) but upon opening them with either winzip or winrar, they tell me the files are either corrupt or part of a multi-part file /Unexpected enf of archive.

Any ideas
Thanks
Jose

I agree with JustinHarrison 100%! Who the **** is Telkom to tell us what we should be happy with?

Hmmm. At last found some time to open the downloaded files. (It's a bit hectic around here! ;)) And have the same problem as jcorreia, namely, can't open the files. Any ideas Justin?

Download Links Etc...

Firstly my apologies for the delayed response, I have just come off a 26 hour all night coding session, hope you guys don’t hate me :)

Right, let’s get this party started!

====> For all those sharp souls who checked out my profile and jumped onto my website, well done! (Julle is lekker voor op die wa) and my apologies if you experienced any issues with the downloads – we have just moved over to an open source content management system…

Mexico Report:

This report highlights the differences and similarities between South Africa and Mexico, mainly explored from the perspective of Internet connectivity and communications infrastructure.

The report documents that Mexico has enormous potential as a cyber island, and that many South African Internet entrepreneurs may well find this to be the perfect alternative to the current telecommunication restrictions in South Africa!

The 3G Report

This Report explores the high speed Internet service offering via the mobile networks.

Written in January 2005, this report is due for an update as some of the statistics are a little out of date. The pricing levels and service offerings have also changed.

In addition to some of the facts and figures that have changed, the reports conclusion is somewhat off the mark now that the comparative services mentioned in the report have tested to be less than adequate.

An update to this report should be posted before year end. Despite the facts above this report still makes for an informative read, all be it that it is somewhat outdated.
