Fraudulent WASP subscriptions are a major problem – MTN

MTN is fighting back against the staggering number of cyber attacks and fraudulent subscriptions prevalent on digital platforms.

Following an investigation into fraudulent WASP subscriptions by MyBroadband, the mobile operator provided information regarding the pervasive problems with providing content services through digital platforms.

MTN being the main vector for SIM swap fraud, I'm surprised that they're complaining about WASP subscriptions.

It is not a problem. You cellphone network providers are making it a problem. You are making it our problem because you share in criminal profits.

The solution is easy. Either stop the whole system and cancel it or implement new methods where the consumer has the final say before anything happens. Easy peasy.

Iow use vectors that are easily spoofed. See no mention of double opt-in sms or ussd.

Fraudulent WASP subscriptions are a major problem for MTN in the sense that MTN is making a lot of money from these fraudulent transactions whilst MTN's customers (that have been the victims of these fraudulent transactions) are forced to move to competing network operators because MTN has until recently turned a blind eye.

Why does evil telkom not have these issues?

Surprisingly, both Telkom Mobile and Cell C have WASP subscriptions blocked by default on new SIM cards.

No wonder Telkom Mobile and Cell C are struggling without all the profits they could be making from fraudulent WASP transactions while MTN and Vodacom are coining it.
