So everywhere Virgin has been advertising that you can buy R99 of airtime and it comes with 500 sms's free. First I bought one at checkers(where they were advertising it) and I never got the sms's. It was just a normal R99.
So next I went to a Virgin store(pavillion) and asked specifically, and explained that previously I did not get the sms's. The lady assured me that the one she was selling me was the right thing and I would get the sms's.
Surprise surprise, once again Its just a normal R99 voucher and I am being charged for sms's.

Anyone else had any success?

According to VM website, the R99 voucher gives you:

M'tshele Nine Nine Texter
FOR JUST R99 YOU GET:

* R99 in airtime.
* 500 Free SMSs.
* You only pay R1.99 per minute for the first 5 minutes of the day and dropping to 99 cents thereafter.
* Just 99c per minute for all calls made from one Virgin Mobile number to another.
* 9 Free "Please call me's" per day .You can get this awesome voucher at the following stores: Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Spar, CNA, Jet & Edgars. But it's only for Prepay customers!
* Use it for Voice Calls, MMSs, Emails, Facebook, Twitter, Messenger and Internet Browsing.

T's and C's apply. This voucher is valid for 30 days and includes 500 SMSs. Here's the thing: once these are up you will pay a flat SMS rate of 60cents per SMS. You cannot carry over any SMSs you don't use, so get typing!

So perhaps you should contact VM

Prepaid. Do I attempt to go back to a shop or is there a callcenter that might know more than the shop?

It almost feels like a scam that Prepaid offer of 500 free SMS's with R99 recharge, or now also available 250 SMS's on R50 recharge. My two kids and me have been struggling almost continuously to get those. They were only credited once straight automatically, mostly you have to call them several times to obtain them. Bloody nuisance ! But they last more than one month at least.

I had the same issue, this is what I did. I had a Cell C sim from when I came home for the world cup. When I got back in Dec it turned out that Virgin would be best suited for my usage and saw the Mtshele Nine Texter package. I topped up R50 and never received the SMS's. After speaking to a few people at customer care I was assured I would get the texts. This was not the case. I opened a complaint form on hellopeter where VM is a subscriber. The next day I received a call from a manager and was told what the issue was. You need to change your prepaid package to the Mtshele Nine package, and then each time you top up you will get the free texts. Honestly my free texts just ran out last week ( After having free messages since Dec - Im not complaining as they are meant to be valid over a month)
I then had family come over from the UK for xmas and before I topped up their phones I called customer care, explained what I wanted (the prepaid accounts to both be on the Mtshele Nine package and bang, both were credited with the texts.

I then went into Checkers today, topped up with R50 and about 10 minutes later I received a text saying that I had 250 free sms's (I sent a test sms right after topping up, and was not charged)

I recommend that you follow what I did, and if your problem is still not resolved then goto hellopeter and complain. They should inform you that you need to change prepaid packages, but thats probably in the T's&C's
