Free and easy method to start your own website

While some may view this as a symbol of Google's largesse, I see it as just another way Google is being anti-competitive.

I would love to see a report that quantifies the number of jobs which Google has cost the global economy. Instead of using their muscle to empower and collaborate with local web developers, they eliminate them and further dominate the entire digital eco-system.

Casualties: web developers, designers, hosting providers, graphic designers, etc...I see this as a problem that will grow.

It's a win in most cases, the company advertising should win, they get a free website.... Get to grow there business, the above haven't really lost because who says they would have payed for a website? Especially if someone was going to charge them an arm and a leg!

If they do see the benifits of the website they may be willing to pay someone to design a more professional website..

Listen people--hosting, data and owning your website for the small businessman is unaffordable in South Africa right now--this is a step in the right direction.
I use Google Sites for my Academic work to share my lectures and research because my stupid university wont allow me to have my own space on their network (they use SharePoint, and the moment is not easily accessible by users outside the LAN); so alternative is Google. So either open the networks or collaborate with Google. MS is equally anti-competitive.

So beeg up to Google. I wonder if this hosted on local servers (for local only data users).??

Can people really not afford a couple bucks for hosting?
Tons of hosts provide a web site maker free, and can be cheaper than a pack of cigarettes.

there is a limit to the traffic in and out; imho too much headache. with Google Sites, it is simple and concise, unlimited traffic. Adverts also welcome to earn you couple of bucks.

I dont think its about affording it, people are scared to shell out money for something that MAY/possibly have no benefit. So they rather just opt for nothing or a free version.

it helped me big time.I can see change on my sales.I even got a domain names already
www.esahweng.co.za
www.themomenthairs.co.za

Protip:
For this site: www.esahweng.co.za
your main content div needs to have a background color or image to make it easier to read the content.

To see the difference, try changing it from this:
Code:
<div id="webstore-main" class="webstore-main">

to this:

Code:
<div id="webstore-main" class="webstore-main" style='background-color:white;'>

And then move that background color style to your css or use a tiled image in your css if you're happy with it :)

What's up with Vodacom advertising wozaonline over the weekend as it's own free website service?

they are a partner and sponsering 10000 free top level domains aka .co.za domains

Google should stay with what they have why would they do this ?

Now immediately clients are asking why should I pay you to do my site I can get it free with Google

Now lets think about that for a moment

Yes you can get it free

But .....

Your site can be taken down any time ....
Because its a site builder, can you build a site like I do ??
Can you add custom coded banners/ text anywhere you would like even off screen and moving this on screen with jquery or whatever you want to use ?
I personally think this makes any business look unprofessional with the powered by text at the bottom
A large company will never make use of this why ? Easy because they will lose more clients than gaining gauranteed

Further how can this clown say he received 40% more business on what is that determined ? Does he even get traffic to his website ? Does he know what analytics is ? Does he know what a conversion ratio is ?

Best part of all someone created a new thread last week that his woza site can only be viewed in Google chrome, if that isn't self promotion what is
Google get a life and stay with what you were doing before
Pay peanuts get monkeys all I can say, In this case pay nothing and get .....
The money used to set this up could of been spent much better than what they are doing now, as I am sure the government funded this

On a side note If you were to look at the site builder structure this will never get more Page Rank than 1, you will never outrank any company with a custom coded structure

"For now, Google’s main adversary in South Africa is the Luddite who remains offline"

Giving them free websites will not help this at all, make internet more affordable, more stable and more accessible so everyone can benefit from it

@byron_spy--it seems from your signature you are a graphic designer--so naturally you will feel like that. For majority of us who can't custom design their own website, this is a reasonable and worthwhile alternative.

Thats was just a good domain though, my wife is a graphics designer I am full blast web developer and maintain various SEO campaigns be it pay per click and organic ranking, this apart from running a hosting company as well

It may seem worthwhile for a small company of 2-3 employees ......
