So I have a few DVDs that I bought legally over the years and I want to rip them and have them all stored on my laptop.

I have DVDs of season 4, season 5 and season 6 of a popular US TV show called Lost. Seasons 1, 2 and 3 have already been ripped and stored on my laptop, and I sold those DVDs at Cash Crusaders. I used DVD Shrink to rip the first 3 seasons. DVD Shrink can't rip the other seasons, because they are better copy-protected. I tried WinX DVD, Handbrake and Format Factory to rip the other seasons but to no avail. WinX DVD notified me to buy their product which will allow me to rip the DVDs. Isn't the a better software I can use that is free? A software that will be able to rip even the better copy-protected DVDs? Or do I have no choice but to buy a DVD ripper? If so, which one should I purchase?

It's not free, but DVDFab has never let me down. Lately I even use it to rip 3D bluray to HSBS (half-side-by-side) for my media player and 3D tv.

Definitely highly recommended.

I downloaded WinDVD, it did its job of decripting my DVD allowing ShrinkDVD to rip it. Only problem is that some episodes of Lost are divided into 2 instead of the usual 1 file, i.e. one part of the VOB file's episode is 26 minutes and the other is 13 minutes. I'll try other software tonight.

Since you're buying DVD's, ripping the content, and then subsequently selling them, do you REALLY have to specify that you bought them legally? :p
