Hi All,

I know little about a mac, but i have my boss' kids laptop that has files deleted from trash that need to be recovered. any advice on software to do this, free is at all possible?

Thanks.

I once formatted my 500 GB HDD in error. Used R-Studio on Windows to get it back. Not sure if it there's a version for Mac though. Be careful. Copying anything to the drive you trying to recover data from risks the possibility of over-writing the deleted data. Remember that that when you delete a file, all your OS does is make the location of the file available. If the memory location is replaced by another file, it cannot be recovered. So, even if you get an application that works, just by installing it risks losing the data altogether. Try installing the recovery software onto a flash drive, and run it from there. And when recovering, copy the recovered file to the flash or external HDD. Not sure if this would work on Mac,

If it's Lion or later, Time Machine automatically keeps a local backup in /.MobileBackups

Good time to talk to them about backups :)

thanks I managed to recover many of the files, some weren't but I think their data must have been over written

If you survived the command line, then well done. If you need a GUI, in future consider some of the options available for recovery on MacUpdate (they're paid apps) but at all costs avoid Stellar Phoenix. In fact, MU is a great place to see the software that is available and the software that must be avoided.
