Heh, so what we're saying here is there's a whole lotta clucking going on and someone else can be the guinea pig? :D (..and no, I haven't personally tried these apps yet: it's a HUGE mission for me (never mind irresponsible) to futz with my production PC (and I don't have a spare to play with at this time))

HEH - I'll take the plunge, I been looking for a new firewall to replace Kerio on my laptop. Will also look at the AV - I installed a legal version of Norton AV 2006 & firewall on my PC this weekend so that is covered atm. Norton just slows my boot up time down but further it works fine.... Don't know what the renewal fees are but if more than $10 in a year's time, it is out - to be replaced....
On the question of AV progs - I installed CA eTrust AV for Windows Vista on my Laptop (running WinXPSP2) and it runs fine - free for a year but i prefer these free for life progs.

Will also look at the AV -

 DANGER

To all those out there who like free progs - don't install Comodo antivirus. I cannot uninstall it and after further investigation found this:
It’s not that i want to write comodo anti virus software down but after installing it my new laptop was destroyed for the part of the functioning of the operating system. At first it looked ok, the scan took some time but the result was that there was no virus found on my computer, then a message came that updates where available so i downloaded them automaticaly. After doing that and restarting, my whole system frose and it seemed to me that the full memory was occupied by comodo. With patienly waiting after each click i tryed to uninstall this software but that didn’t work under those conditions. Many hours later i removed under Safe Mode the Comodo folder, and later on my whole account ,and created a new account, thinking it would be over, but no, the installer comes back and hoockes up everything i clicked to their installer that has nested itself somewhere on my System, so my advice is not to use this software since software you install on your computer should be easy uninstallable, and not acting as malicious software as this program does.

Still trying to find a way to kill those 'comodo' folders on my system - can anyone help??
Even deleting the run command in the registry does not kill it.

Backup your data, reformat and reinstall? :D

I don't like proprietary free programs, only open-source, free programs, such as ClamAV, will pass muster...

...because you don't know what was programmed into said program (no source code available)...

...and besides, Comodo is an unknown (fairly new) brand... I'll stick to AVG Free or something which's longer in the market.

I have gone through the registry and killed all entries related to Comodo *spit* (there were thousands) and restarted and it at least does not recover the deleted folder anymore but it is trying to re-install the software which obviously fails due to errors - deleted files relating to Comodo *spit*. Will play around and see if I can get rid of it.

EDIT: Well, finaly its gone 3 hours later and using a utility called Windows Install Clean up *B%tch*
Now to tackle my other PC :(
