Free graphic design software

OK - so I've entered this small competition where I need to design an A3 poster and an A5 booklet cover.

Now I don't need/want professional graphic design packages such as PS, Corel Draw 10 to create my poster but I want something more than MS Word functionality.

Thanks for the help in advance.
 
Posters and book covers are more the job of software like MS Publisher (Or Apple Pages if you use a Mac)

The Gimp is an image editor similar to Photoshop (With less features and a terrible interface :-) ), which is total overkill for what you want to do. More importantly, it is not meant for what you want to do
 
Yeah, was trying out GIMP and it seemed to much like PS (without all the advanced features).

Luckily I have MS Publisher on my laptop so I'll have a stab at that :-)

if you want something good and to look nice you need a good proggie

gimp is ok but corel will do
