The idea is not bad and it is just the beginning, hope it will be implemented in other towns and areas soon with reasonable bandwidth available for surfing the net. Future may bring the free WiFi access points where you can bring your own laptops.

this is not really feasible, but it's a start. what we really want is each household to have internet access at an absolute minimum cost.

I was referring to the bring your laptop wifi hot spots, most airports have that.

All the public libraries in Cape Town have free internet already. You have to be a member of the library, which means they can control it a little better. Problem is, usually when I'm at the library, and I can't remember a book title that I want, or just need to check mail quick, the computers are usually inundated with kids playing crappy web games. I hate talking to librarians, so I usually just find another book. Lame.

Computers in the Libraries

Sorry, only saw this now. The computers in the libraries are Smart Cape. Cape Town has 100 public libraries, each of them have 5 free public internet terminals. The computers use a central server and thin client device - all operating on Linux. The issue that started this tread is that Sooful and co. at the city have now decided to expand the facilities to non library points.

The facilities are slow due to bandwidth and the high cost of Internet access - something that Sooful has been fighting for a long time. By 2010, the City will have its fibre infrastructure and it will be a different ball game. Even though it is slow, they still have about 140 000 subscribers.

I also know that they are busy upgrading the facilities to increase speed and allow for usb sticks to be used. Remember that the facilities that are currently there were installed in 2002 and 2003, so they are 5 - 6 years old already.
