Apple has announced that it will be providing free iPhone 4 cases for all customers and issuing a refund for those who have already purchased an iPhone 4 bumper.

"A lot of people have told us the bumper solves the signal strength problem. Okay. Great. Let’s give everyone a case. We want to give everyone is going to get a free case.

We can't make enough bumpers, so we will offer a choice of cases. You can apply on our website late next week. Pick a case, zoom, we'll send it off to you."

We'll let you know when the application form becomes available.

Wait, what? There's a serious design flaw, and they give out a free case? What about a recall and redesign? I guess iPhone users need to be happy with second-best.

Who needs a recall? :confused: People can still return the phone, no questions asked, with no restocking fee, up to thirty days after purchase.
 
That's not the point. Why should anyone be inconvenienced by something Apple clearly overlooked? I said recall because all the iPhone 4 devices that are currently sitting in stockrooms have the exact same problem.

I also think they need a recall. Some users will tolerate the design flaw, but is that really how it should be...? I know that would be up to their own stupidity so I guess they deserve it if they decide to hold onto it after the 30 days then :).
 
Apple took a chance on exposing antenna issues by placing it on outside in order to gain better overall reception - at the cost of possible attenuation by the user that is exacerbated in areas of poor reception.The bumper mostly resolves this. Read Anandtech's articles on the matter.What I will take away from all of the hoopla/blogging/press conference? - I'm still getting the phone in Sept because, overall, it is the best smartphone out there for now.End of, kla.

Well, you get a lot of dropped calls & signal loss with it, so I must assume you want to get it for the funky ipod player and ibooks?

Cos the Samsung Galaxy S runs circles round the iPhone 4.

I prefer to stick to facts not fud.

Fact1- Refunds are 1.7% compared to 6.0% for 3GS, early shipments.
Fact2- Complaints about signal are only from 0.55% of users based on apple care data.
Fact3- The iPhone4 does drop more calls than the 3GS but only by less than 1 per 100, hence the free case.

Apple must really fail at PR for admitting they drop more calls...
Actual iPhone 4 users have not found the signal drop to be as bad as exaggerated. I don't plan on getting an iPhone 4 though, 3G is still ok for me.

I jailbreaked my 3G yesterday and it feels like I got a new 3GS. :)

Will keep my iPhone 3G for now and then grab a Galaxy S when it gets released by Vodacom in SA.

I reverted to stock, the memory takes a hit with IOS4, multitask works but the memory is too little. Will probably give it a shot again though.

Androids are looking good, I won't mind one either.

Yes, it may very well be the best selling phone out there.
But by no means, can it be considered the best smartphone out there. It's not.

IIRC Consumer Reports ranked it highest so it certainly fills the "one of the best" billing, no?

I'd grant it that billing yes, but we're all aware of the cons of the iPhone, so I won't list them as they've been repeated to death.
But I certainly wouldn't rank or credit it as "the best".
 
I would. I can't think of a single phone that is better than the iPhone 4.

I can. Basically any phone where I have the freedom to choose what I can/can't have on my phone, is better than an eyephone 4.

Getting tired of having to jailbreak my iPhone 3G constantly, just to experience freedom from the draconian laws of iFruit.
