I have heard rumors that when you have an ADSL line installed, all local telephone calls on that line are free. Is this true, or just some BS?

Thanks!

In many countries that do not have the word "Africa" in their name, yes.
Perhaps in South Georgia, South Dakota or South Korea, but not South Africa. :D
No free calls for you buddy. Cough up that 59c for that 1 second call.

Yeah local calls in SA are free whether you have an ADSL line or not... and then I woke up.

I have heard that the calls are free as well.. you just have to climb into a manhole to splice into someone elses line..

skype even had a promotion where on specail "SKYPE OUT" days they would give u 20 cents in EUROS, i sinded up 10 times so i could phone my mates in the UK. Telkom give us something?!?!??! Other than a bunch of CRAP telkom will never give us something

I think Canada is the only country in the World where all telphone calls are free except for international.

Just to back up what has been said, this is quoted from the Telkom website at: http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/home_how_much.html

How is DSL billed?

You will be billed on your normal monthly Telkom telephone account for all components of the Telkom DSL access service. The DSL related prices are incremental (over and above) to your existing telephone monthly line rental and telephone calls.

ps: to all lawyers - the above quote does consititute "fair use" right? :)

The U.S. also allows free local phone calls. They charge you some miniscule rate for national calls between the States.

Doesn't Korea and Japan do the same?

ya if u use skype, any call is free

EDIT: Any call from one computer running Skype to another computer running Skype is free via the internet, but any calls (except for certain toll free numbers) that are made to landlines are charged for using the SkypeOut service, whose tarrifs are MUCH cheaper then a Telkom line.
