"In late 2004, game publisher Funcom decided to try something a little different. Instead of actually charging users to play its game Anarchy Online, it opened the massively multiplayer online role-player to anyone who wanted to give it a try. The limited-time offer was extended into 2005 after the company restressed its long-term goal of eliminating subscription fees. Today, Funcom announced that it's doing it once again, making play free for new accounts through early 2007. The offer does not work with any of the game's three expansion packs. How will Funcom stay afloat? Its recent deal with in-game advertising agency Massive may have something to do with it. For more information on the free trial, check out Anarchy Online's"

I play AO atm on the free account since FEB 2005 and belive me there is no better way to get more paying players than offering free accounts (explination below).
Also they rake in alot of cash by in-game adverts on billboards..everything from the lastest rock concerts to soft-drinks to new shows on BBC even with trailers showing.

The free account only consists of the orginial game called the classic AO which is ok to play at first and get the basic's down..but then you see all the other cool stuff amour/weapons/maps/missions/quests etc that is not available with the free account and soon you will be upgrading to a paying account and presto and new paying customer that would have never even given the game a second look if it was not for the FREE part...

mmmmm.......sounds interesting.....always wanted to play a MMPORG.

Tell me, does this run OK on ADSL ??

Guildwars is very simplistic compared to AO. I played AO for a long time, Guildwars is nowhere as complex. If you want a longterm thing [for free] then AO is great, if you want a shortish-term "dungeon siege" then Guildwars is better.

The whole class+skill+crafting+buffing system in AO ican be so complicated you actually have to read guides for each of the classes. And i mean each class are so unique it is almost like a new game, i spent 2 months easily just figuring out which class i want to take to level 50 [200-220 is max level]

Of course the graphics in AO sucks , but hey you can build robots, fly around in hovercraft, snipe mobs , sneak , fly and build any item imaginable [weapons, armor, augmentation] ...and the whole Deus Ex effect comes in there somewhere :P

Oh...and guildwars with its guild-halls do not even touch AO's organization system where you build cities! And if you actually buy into the game then there's the whole alien-raid system [huge mothership attacking an org's base etc ]

The game ran fine for me on ADSL up until the end of August then i think the ports got more throttled so now if i want lag fre game play i have to use a proxy sever , using Mr BEEPS free service atm and it seems to be fine for now.

Just get ready for one hell of a learning curve on AO i came from two previous MMPORG and this one makes them look like a pre-school group.
But it's load of fun once you get going and has a big player base.
