Hey guys,

I do not know much about web developement but am researching this on behalf of my company. We would like to start an online store to sell some of our products (probably about 10-20 products) and allow for logic such as price brackets (if a customer orders more than a certain quantity, they get a discount etc) and allow allow the customer to choose delivery options (bulk freigh, courier etc). We would also like to build credit card functionality to allow customers to pay by credit card.

Do any of you know any free/open source software that we could use to develope the online store? We have looked at a proper solution that ties into our MIS system, but it was too expensive - our idea is to build something cheap and simple that does NOT tie into our MIS system to see if our online store generates sales traffic and then hopefully migrate to the full blown solution.

If you guys could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Wordpress / Joomla / Drupal with some plugins and a payment merchant.

So I'd google "building a shop using wordpress" and go from there :-) ...

.... and allow for logic such as price brackets (if a customer orders more than a certain quantity, they get a discount etc) ......

I did some research for a fellow forumite some time ago and determined that Prestashop handled price brackets the best out of the box.

I would suggest that you download them and try them out locally before deciding which one to use/modify/skin.

Also check which payment handling systems and freight modules are available free and what needs to be purchased.

thanks guys - I will look into all the solutions above! Really appreciate the help!

@OP: Just a word of caution, if you're new to this and only want to use an Open Source shopping cart to save some money, do yourself a favor and hire someone to manage it afterwards.

Too many websites get hacked cause the owner wants to save money, and use the cheapest option available. Unless you're a security expert yourself, or at least know all the security pitfalls of a shared hosting environment, Open Source applications, and a few other aspects of the internet in general, don't run a website without using a security expert who can secure your website. And, security isn't a once-off thing, it needs to be manged and updated on a regular basis.

Yes you're quite right - we would definitely need a managed service. We would probably have the website developed and then handed over to our existing website management company.

What do you guys think of Mygate for credit card processing? THey seem quite alot cheaper than some of the other guys (Netcash) and they seem to integrate with many of the online checkout stores linked above.

Hi, I would suggest getting a theme from Woocommerce and install it on your Wordpress installation. The Woocommerce framework has discounts, inventory management etc etc included and is not expensive. If you need any help just drop me a message.

This question gets asked a lot, can we have a sticky somewhere on this forum to just highlight this for the guys who don't want to use the search function?

I also suggest Wordpress, joomla, you can use some free templates with some pulgins available on the official sites
