If its possible for kind-hearted individuals like Clipse and MrBeep to offer proxy services that are either free or very cheap, why haven't ISP's been doing the same thing?

Surely it should be fairly easy for places like WebAfrica, Axxess and others to offer similar services to attrack new customers.

I don't get it.

Interesting question :P

I can only speak for myself in this regard, from the start of nukecap about a year ago, I had a goal to help south-african adsl users with whatever resources I have and now its spreading over few other services aswell with the same goal. Services which I charge for like our proxy services is being used for other services like freeproxy and the likes.

My only guess why other ISP's havnt done this, they have to big market of other related services to cater for ie. hosting, dialup, adsl and to offer something for free would probably just add to much workload on customer service :0

Dunno, Im fine with 12-16hrs a day of work :P

BarFly, You could offer this service yourself. Buy a VPS from www.servint.com for U$ 50 p/m and if you know how to set it up, you can make some money on it.

And don't worry there is no such thing as a free lunch, all these guys are getting their money back either through free advertising or conversion to paid services.

BlobNow I suppose its true in some regards that its not totally free, but you see the difference here is the fact that the services I offer for free(not live yet but nearing final product) will not need anyone to financially support it.

So the only thing accurate would be that Im supporting the free services out of my pocket but in affect the payment go towards advertising since more users get to know about nukecap. I would agree on this, but the nature of the services is free and thats the important thing afaik.

I'm not attacking you clipse. I'm just trying to explain to BarFly how this thing works, purely an information session from my side :)

I have no doubt that you guys are getting your money back one way or the other. If you can make an extra buck for providing me with a free service, good for you.

I'm also not suggesting that ISP's offer similar services for free. I was just wondering why they haven't been offering it CHEAPLY.

Even if they charged R100pm, then a 10GB shaped ADSL account (R342) + Proxy service (R100), I would be paying R442 for what amounts to a 10GB unshaped account.
Still a lot cheaper than the current 4GB unshaped accounts (R627).
Prices from WebAfrica as an example.

Seems like a relatively easy way for ISP's to attract new customers by adding value instead of merely reselling SAIX accounts...

true but you will need a very oddly orientated customer service, explaining to them why they dont get the same ping as local unshaped accounts etc. I suppose if they advertise it unshaped for gaming and not relating to low ping, then it could work.

I reckon they dont offer things like that because its such a niche market. Most users of ADSL in this country are simply not clued up enough to understand why they would want unshaped as opposed to shaped.

Just my 2c

What is the SOCKS 5 server software ?

I actually have access to a VPS in Europe, what is the name of the software that should be run as a SOCKS 5 daemon on such a machine ?

Me too (well, in the US actually, and it's not a VPS - it's a dedicated server) - and I would like to offer proxy service to a couple of friends...

What software to use?

Clipse.
How does this work. Even if you have available a unshaped proxy and i have a shaped account. How would I get the bandwidth.....

pupa please participate in the thread in my signature, the questions and answers can be located there.

clipse : one more thing that is not included in the posts there in ur sig, what is happening about that wireless router u were planning to buy :D

unrelated post arc, and got nothing to do with this thread or any service I offer :-)

Feel free to ask me that somewhere else.

*Bump*

you will need a socks server to run a socks proxy. I dont know of windows based servers, im running sockd on freebsd when I had old socks server running.

Shiz that was fast. :D

I run a FreeBSD server in the US - so no problem there. Basically what I wanted to know is how you configure your proxy for security?
