"Free" Vodacom Internet!

Vodafone live! Free Browsing

Why is it that a friend of mine (who has a vlive branded phone) can browse the internet free with applications such as opera mini and chat on chat applications such as MXit free of charge with only R0.00 in his account? I on the other hand have a normal phone with the vodafone live! settings but when i use the above mentioned applications i get charged for it.. but strangely my friend with the vodafone live! phone can access them FREE OF CHARGE
 
Why does the original vodafone live! branded phone Login to MXit with R0.00 ?
and why does my normal phone with the Vodafone live manual settings gets charged for using the vlive apn?
 
U talking of websites other than on the normal Vodafone live page??

I see this post was done quite some time ago and it probably is not an issue anymore. As I was reading the post I was struck at the audacity some people took to do this. I would never dare. I was just wondering, and maybe V3G could answer me:
exactly how much information does Vodacom have about people going online? Can't Vodacom trace these guys who abuse these loopholes and make them pay?

Vodacom can probably trace your Phone IMEI number and what about "look4me". Even pinpoint your exact location. Vodacom3G, could you please explain to me how Vodacom keep track of data usage and to what extent they are able to track these "freeloaders". Is it easier to track contract users than prepaid users etc. I find this quite interesting and although the free proxy situation (if I read the post correct) is not a problem anymore I am still hoping that you (V3G) or anyone else could answer my question.
 
Any phone that used the Vlive apn was getting free internet...
It was Vodas mistake imo.

AFAIK, the VLive APN was just for Free Browsing on the VLive Portal, but other Data Charges(like downloading and paying for content subscriptions) still applied.

I am not disagreeing. I was just wondering to what extent Vodacom (or any other Service Provider) know the details of all the people using data on their servers. Is it possible for Vodacom to pinpoint where and who any user is?

I am quite interested in the usual Big Brother conspiracies :D
 
I do not think that it is possible for Vodacom or any other Service Provider to really log all these details. How many connections does Vodacom handle every day? The logistics of keeping track of every IMEI (or whatever method they use to track users) connecting and cross-referencing it with their account department will be to big to handle. That is why they probably only tried to plug the hole instead of catching the guys.

Maybe I am wrong. Also, proving that these people "surfed freely" will be difficult.

My 2 cents worth Babrevian. Maybe someone knows more.

Nope last year some time any Vlive apn phone had free browsing to all sites on the net. People were loading Vlive firmware on non branded phones using any sim and had free access to Mxit.

Pity. The year before last my VLive handset got stolen, so i switched back to my MTN Number eversince. So thats probably why i didnt know about it.

okay what happened in the past belongs in the past and i dont think this issue should be buried... just let it go people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Not sure what you're trying to achieve with this thread. I know (some) of the answers to your questions...but I don't see any legit reason why you'd be so curious about VC's ability to track your activities.
