Hi all,

I just wanted to let you know about my new application called Wildlife Tracker. Essentially, it is a crowd sourcing application for animal sightings in game reserves. It also has a whole bunch of features, such as :

• View nearby sightings with estimated distances to each of them
• View alerts issued by the parks, such as gates or roads being closed
• Get real-time notifications & live tile updates on new sightings and alerts
• Use your favourite navigation application to get turn-by-turn directions to the sighting
• Help game rangers by submitting violations or suspicious activities
• Full of useful information on the parks & animals
• Fully functional without an internet connection

At the moment, only the Kruger Park is supported, but support for other game reserves is planned (Pilanesberg is already in the works)

You can download it for free from Windows Phone Store and here are some screenshots of the app:

Lastly, any feedback is more than welcome :)

PERFECT timing:P Off to Kruger soon.

Going to download it tonight! Screen shots look awesome!

Thanks very much :) I'm still trying to promote it and get the word out, so not many users at the moment :) Spread the word if you can and a rating would be greatly appreciated :)

On the topic of poaching, all endangered species are not visible to the public. For example, people can post sightings of Rhinos etc, but those sightings will never be downloaded or even visible to anyone. In actual fact, the application has support to notify rangers of any illegal activities including poaching.

The wild dog in those screenshots is endangered :D

Yes, you are correct and I admit it was a typo on my part what I meant to say was poached. So as it stands only rhinos are hidden from the public, as they are the ones that are poached. However, should it come to it Wild Dogs, or any other animal, can be hidden from the public at the flick of a switch.

I just thought I'd resurrect this thread to say I used this app on my trip to Kruger on my time off and it is AWESOME. The interface is fantastic, the features are well thought out and I literally had my phone on with the app open the entire trip... whether it was for navigation to see where I was on the park roads, check out sightings others had made... check for closed roads in the alerts etc, or just log sightings myself (photo's included).

Reception is a bit of a problem in kruger... but the app compensates by caching sightings to upload when you get back into reception. And for those "out of date" sightings... at least you have a bit of a clue where you might find a certain animal the next day when planning your drive. It's soo much better than relying on those boards at camps... and the real-time nature of the app really does make the trip better.

Aside from the usefulness of the app, the support is phenomenal (I gave quite a bit of feedback to Mauro while on the trip, and he responded promptly every time), and it's very well thought out. Doesn't crash either, and handles unplanned situations (like having to reboot the phone before a sighting is uploaded, it will keep the sighting local and push it when you have signal again).

The thing that shocked me is that the parks apparently aren't in favour of these apps!? The mind boggles! They have sightings boards at camps, people stop each other and communicate sightings, receptionists at camps have no idea what sand roads are closing when it rains (I had to tell them of the few I knew about when the heavy rain came down the one day as the "email hadn't come through"). An app like this allows people to communicate loads of things that help out more than you'd think at first.

The other day I read an article on people being asked to spot wild dogs... HELLO!? This is the perfect way to accomplish this. How about you sit down with these app developers and ask to mine their database. You'd have species, location, time and a photo. What more could you ask for? Open this up and encourage people to spot the animals you want to count (leopard / wild dog / cheetah etc).

It also has a section to alert a ranger. Perfect for the elephant carcass we saw buried in the bush that still had its tusks on.

Big up to Mauro the developer. This is a quality app. Now we just need more people to download and use it.

If you have a windows phone and are going to Kruger. Do yourself a favour and download this app. Mauro... you need to bring this to android and iphone as well if you want to grow your user base quickly.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the post Brendan I'm and really glad you liked the app :)

With regards to the other Mobile OS's, as there is currently no app available for them, an interim measure has been put in place whereby they can view all the sightings on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WildlifeTrackerSightings) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/wltsightings). They cannot post sightings from these, but at least it provides them a view of what has been spotted.

Like I mentioned, I'm implementing a way to help notify third parties of any sightings that may be posted. They will then be able to use the data for whatever their research requires.

Lastly, as usual, any feedback or ideas are more than welcome.

Hope you all enjoy the app :)

Will an iphone app ever be available? If so when?

Nice app but only on windows OS! The vast majority of smartphones are running iOS or Android.
If you are an iOS or Android user, there are a number of wildlife sighting app out there. The best one seems to be Tracking the Wild
