I'm running FreeNAS-8.0.1 on my HP Microserver with a 4x 2GB HDD's. This morning it started beeping. Under volumes it has a status of "DEGRADED".

Active Volumes: 1
Volume Path Used Available Size Status Available actions
RAID /mnt/RAID 5.2 TiB (96%) 173.5 GiB 5.3 TiB DEGRADED

How do I check if a disk has failed? Could it be due to the volume being almost full or or drive failure.

Degraded means one of the disks in no longer part of the array, likely because it failed.

Follow the information provided on the FreeNAS site: http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_storage.html#replacing-a-failed-drive

Thanks.. I rebooted the nas just before you replied and now the available space is no longer displayed. Under Storage I get the following:

Active Volumes: 1
Volume Path Used Available Size Status Available actions
RAID /mnt/RAID None (Error) Error getting available space Error getting total space

I checked under "View Disks" but it doesn't show which drive has failed.

Under "View Disks" I clicked in Disk 3's "edit" button and get the following:

I ran these 2 commands, zpool status and zpool import

Welcome to FreeNAS
[root@nas] ~# zpool status

[root@nas] ~# zpool import

action: The pool cannot be imported. Attach the missing
devices and try again.

Does this mean that 2 disks have failed?

Are all four disks in one RaidZ1 pool?

If I am reading that correct then you are stuffed.

Yes all disks are park of the same pool

:(

In theory you should simply add another then (tricky since all drive bays are occupied but could use the CD-ROM bay with the BIOS hack) wait for it to replicate and then pull out the dodgy drive.

I say this based on conventional RAID's though, so not 100% certain if the same for FreeNAS but should be.

z1 = 1 disk redundancy. If you've got >1 failed disk within that same vdev then you're out of luck unfortunately because any failed vdev = entire zpool fails too

Is there a command I can run to see which disk/s have failed?

Sorry bud cant help you there, you'll have to check the freenas doc's. I'm not actually running freenas yet, I'm still in early planning phase of my build

Yes, looks like you're screwed with 2 disks gone. The reason I use raidz2 even though you lose capacity.

Looks like you're going to have to restore from backups, you have those right? :p
