Freeware dhcp server

Hmmm

hi,

does anyone know of a freeware dhcp server to run on windows xp that can handle passing the bootfile parameters needed for pxe booting? I already use tftpd in association with dhcp turbo, but dhcp turbo is limited to 5 clients.

I would prefer a non-linux solution at this stage, if possible. something that works on xp:-)

thanks

I believe there are various options you can set in the registry for the built in DHCP with internet connection sharing - you would have to google tho. I imagine PXE is not a feature tho, but you never know.

Bit of a stinker of a request here werner! OK, my usual goto isn't doing well (elG results) today either, but maybe a combo of:

Tftpd32

Aloaha Fairy (what a name!)

..might work? Oh, and the search also turned up Magik DHCP Server which seems less capable. Be sure to look down to the bottom of the respective pages and checking out their 'recommended' and 'most popular' downloads links too (just beware of the "ooo, cool!" time-suckage effect :p)

short term solution might be to download the free Server 2003 evalution copy, 180 days, all the functions dhcp,Remote Installation application (pxe), dhcp relay agent included in RRAS application.

This will tie you over for 6 months while you find alternatives.

thanks bdt, as I said I am already using tftpd32 to handle the pxe side of things, but I need a dhcp server to actually assign an address and then hand off to the pxe server. that is the standard way these things work.
I'm guessing you missed the "And the included DHCP server provides automatic or static IP address assignment" part in the blurb about tftpd32?

The tftpd32 website also explicitly says: (my highlighting)

aloaha fairy actually mentions it does pxe, and still needs the dhcp part from somewhere, so my search continues I think
Maybe you should "search" (read) all the words in front of you...?

hey, I dunno if it is that time of the month with you, but like i said, i already use tftpd32.

as such, lets assume i have had a look at the interface, and seen the big dhcp tab.

lets also assume i have gone to their site and figured out that is it just normal dhcp, and doesnt support option 66 or 67 required for passing parameters for pxe boot.

it just hands out ip address. i can do that using a napkin and a pen.

now, based on these assumptions, please remove me from your list of usual idiots that dont read (a thread, a faq, a manual, a chm, or a doc file ) before asking stupid questions in a forum.

wicked, have a happy weekend.
Wow, not (immediately) getting your (cheap-ass) way sure makes you pissy as hell there werner ..or, as you allude, is it perhaps *your* time of the month? Thing is tho' (and being as you (were) so tense there, maybe it slipped past you), I'm not so much familiar with the progs I dug up, so I'm just going by the blurb that they put out there and it sure as hell looked like you were maybe missing something fundamental. I realise, (usually) being the ĂĽber-geek you are this doesn't happen to you, so I most abjectly apologise for slighting your otherwise towering intellect.

...oh, before I forget: fab weekend to you too, old sport.

ye, so stop treating ppl like idiots @ bdt :D

You 2 are awfully polite and stuff ;)

Heh, sorry it didn't work out; it would've been a neat solution to refer to at a later stage if I ever had need to do this. Y'see, from a tech. standpoint, I consider this place my pet knowledgebase and it just seems right to contribute meaningfully to that. And no, I *hardly* consider my elG skills elite (tho' I'm rather more uppity on the subject of language and the privations it gets subjected to online, but that's an entirely separate topic).

Anyhow, getting back on topic: from the way I read the blurb for the respective apps, it looked a whole lot to me like the workload would be split between the two apps (severely wishful thinking I s'pose), but it was entirely theoretical so no great surprise that I ended so far off base ..but that's what you get for spouting off purely on the basis of the crap you read.

...ah. I've just realised that this is what it feels like to be a sales drone. Ah, I have to go and wash now. Repeatedly.

Oh, and pax: there's no need for old warhorses to clash over being pissy ..it sets a bad example to the young 'uns!

But I don't! ..well, not all the time anyway. OK, ok: I'll concede to occasionally, when the other party turns out to have an actual working intellect in there. :p

Heh, it's basically the only you get to flush the other guy down the crapper without the mods getting in on the act and banning you for profaning their precious forums. (note to mods reading this, I'm being instructional here: I am in NO way denigrating *this* lovely forum!) ;)
