Hi All,

I am in need of some assistance.

I am looking for a decent freeware proxy server to monitor internet usage at one of my smaller clients.

Any suggestions?

Would be great if it worked in server 2008.

Thanks!

What router/firewall is being used at the site?

Smoothwall/IPCop/ClearOS

edit : if you want to block sites (porn etc) then take a look at smoothwall with the URLFilter and Advanced Proxy mods.

I'm using pfSense this side. I just set up a proxy at our office this week too, using ldap for authentication and selectively can assign proxy users with a group policy I set up.

Smoothwall looks good - Not worried about blocking porn sites, just trying to account for their extremely high usage at the moment.

I.e. they have done 174GB since the 6th of Jan.

Smoothwall will do the trick. Been running it for years. Have a look at the sarg add-on for reporting.

Ouchie!

Most probably torrents. If you install Smoothwall (either bare-metal or VM) choose the half-open security model, it stops torrents 100% :whistling: :D

That was my thinking... Especially since their common usage for a month is between 20 and 30GB.

The big problem is they have 3G failover on their routers, so can you imagine if for some reason while this "user" was downloading it failed over to 3G... 170 odd GB on 3G :O

When you find out who is downloading so much, send him a bill:)

Do you know if the users have signed a internet usage policy, or is it covered in the login message?

I highly doubt the users have signed any internet usage policy agreements, or any agreements for that matter.

They should. Or at least make sure it's covered on their hr contract.

Probably not for you to do, but without them signing anything they can't be fired for downloading porn or other illegal content.

Suggest to the Bossly Unit at that client that they need to look at this sort of thing.

Will help a bit in the event of one of the employees doing something naughty (like "hacking" the CoJ or Sanral's servers *cough*)
