My chest Freezer in the kitchen next door to the lounge stops and starts throughout the day. I assume its part of its normal operation as it gets colder and then switches off for a while and so forth.

Everytime it switches on it blanks my TV screen for one to two seconds. This is rather annoying when watching tv as it happens every 20 minutes or so. It seems to happen mostly when watching DSTV (I have the HD PVR connected via HDMI).
Why does this happen? Will a surge protector plug perhaps work? IF so, on the freezer, or on the DSTV or TV?

Does the TV go off like power off or just blank? if it's off off then your wiring isn't right, if it's blank it might be interference from the big coil on the back, but i doubt that would cause the issue.

Something wrong with the electrics in your house. Sound like they're hooked to the same switch on the db board, which they shouldn't be...

Has this been happening for a while or just started recently? If recently, what's changed?

Maybe your freezer is tired of you being a couch potato and wants to talk/spend time with you?

Get a Anti-Surge adaptor plug(x2) and plug freezer and TV into each. SHould help.

You getting mains supply surge when the freezer switches.

Other option is to plug freezer into a further outlet.

This is a common occurrence, As the freezer thermostat switches on it sends a hello command to the TV.
The TV then responds to the Hello command stating it was received correctly.
During this process the TV uses up too much processing power hence the screen goes blank.

Solution: Upgrade your TV.

Also didn’t know this until one of the treads today, apparently it is always the first Friday of August:D

Happens to me as well. But the TV doesn't go off, it just distorts the image for not even a second.
