Freezing sperm

Never thought I would ever have kids. I have a almost 2 year old girl and she is the biggest gift / blessing I ever received

From the data I've gleamed, it's closer to a 15%-20% success rate for vasectomy reversals, but different sources give different figures. It also depends on the method the urologist used.

And while IVF may be an option post vasectomy, remember that the quality of sperm degenerates with age and increases the risk of defects.

And yes, I agree that cryogenic storage is maybe not for most people. Be that as it may, it is for some, and this info is for those who fall into that section. To each his own.

Fair enough - it's an informative post from your side.

The internationally accepted figure is 50-70% for vasectomy reversal, depending on the method used. It's the figure we quote based on fairly large studies. I'd be interested to see your sources? Not trying to be an ass - I would just really like to know where exactly they have figures that low.

As for using older sperm vs cryogenically frozen - really not a lot of data comparing the two. I've seen it work both ways, with normal babies on either side. You can now screen sperm and embryos for abnormalities, so shouldn't be much of an issue either way. It's not nearly the same issue as it is for women, for instance, because we produce fresh sperm on a pretty much daily basis.

I also think it's a very mature decision you've made - good on you for not just 'rolling the dice' and 'getting rid of the problem' when it happens.

Ain't that the truth. I know a 25 year old chick who's been "blessed" with six kids.

I am of the firm believe that after 2 it becomes a curse, not a blessing. She should consider keeping her legs closed occasionally.

And then, twenty years later, unfreezing it, popping it into a syringe, checking whether woman is ovulating, and squirting it up the spout.

There are better ways, perfected by a million years of evolution.

I realize this is a joke, but for those who are curious: your freezer at home has a temperature of about -4°C.

The ones in the lab are between -80°C and -196°C.

Wouldn't mind having one of those to cool down a few beers before a braai!

I know a mother who has eight children and is divorced. She still maintains they were a blessing from God. I refer to them as the "eight is enough gang".
