French labour reform protest

French strikes: situation getting better but crisis not over, says minister

Strikes have continued at French oil refineries as part of an ongoing standoff with the government over labour reforms, as footage emerged apparently showing a middle-aged woman being pushed to the ground by a policeman.

The video, purportedly filmed by a bystander during a protest in Toulouse on Thursday, shows the woman crossing a pavement before the officer pushes her shoulder and seemingly grabs her by the neck. Her head is thrown back and she is rammed against a railing before falling to the ground.

The protests are against François Hollande’s planned labour bill, which aims to make it easier for companies to hire and fire workers, and which was forced through parliament without a vote this month.

France labour dispute: Rail workers strike as protests continue

French railway workers are to go on strike as unions continue to protest against planned labour reforms.

This is expected to further disrupt a transport network already suffering from a shortage of fuel.

French President Francois Hollande has insisted he will not back down over the reforms, which aim to make it easier to recruit and dismiss employees.

Public sector workers in neighbouring Belgium are also going on strike on Tuesday over budget cuts.

The national strike there will see police officers, teachers and some civil servants join train drivers and prison guards, who are already on strike.

As well as budget cutbacks, the unions are protesting against changes to working hours and a rise in the retirement age.

France industrial unrest: Open-ended strike brings rail misery

An open-ended rail strike is under way in France just nine days before the country hosts the Euro 2016 football tournament.

Only 60% of high-speed trains and between a third and a half of other services are expected to run, according to the state rail company (the SNCF).

Trade unions are protesting against work time changes but the strike comes amid general labour unrest.

The wider protests are over a bill to shake up the labour market

The French national airline has asked passengers to check their flight status before travelling, as a pilots' strike coinciding with Euro 2016 caused it to cancel some flights.

About a quarter of Air France pilots were on strike but the company said more than 80% of flights went ahead.

Some Paris-Marseille flights were cancelled on Saturday, affecting fans travelling to the England-Russia game.

The strike will continue for three more days.

France labour dispute: Paris protests descend into violence

Protests in Paris over a French labour reform bill have turned violent, with at least 40 people injured, including 29 police officers, and 58 arrests.

At least 75,000 demonstrators had convened in the capital as the upper house of parliament debated changes to employment laws.

One of the city's best-known attractions, the Eiffel Tower, was closed due to strike action by staff.

The labour reform makes it easier for employers to hire and fire workers.
