For several weeks now at my office I have been getting disconnected from the Internet through my ADSL 512 connection. I am using a Billion Wireless G router connected to my LAN. My comp is connected to the lan through three hubs, about 100 m away from the router.

I use Spype a lot so I know we have been disconnected because the line drops and it takes 30 secs to a minute for the Internet connection to go live again. When this happens my web pages won't load, my MSN disconnects and tries to re-connect and the Skype goes dead.

At first it happened about once or twice a morning at the office, then last two weeks it started happening every hour. The last two days it is happening every twenty mins or so. As you can imagine it is incredibly frustrating talking to people over Skype and to be disconnected so often.

I am in Alberton, South of Johannesburg. I know it is happening across my entire lan (not just my comp) because I can see the others computers also signing back into MSN. Is anyone else noticing these frequent disconnects?

Now, I want to troubleshoot this. But before I call Telkom I have to check my own set-up. These are the steps I envisioned....

1) Connect my laptop directly to the router (not through any hub) and see if it disconnects as frequently. If it does, then I know it is not the lan.

2) Try another router and see if I still have frequent disconnects.

3) I know it is not my Service Provider since I get the disconnects whether I am using M-Web, Axxess or AYCE.

4) Finally, notify Telkom of the frequent disconnects and ask them to troubleshoot from their side.

Can anyone else suggest anything I have overlooked? Anyone having similar experiences? Thanks in Advance!

Its propably the router.. At the back of the router, do a hard-reset.

You will have to setup your lan or any special ISP settings.. But other than that you can only get good results.. unless the Router has had a electrical spike or somethin' is fried...

If the router is under warranty, return it and say its been disconnecting alot.. and its doing this with multiple ISP's...

Check the sync light on the modem/router when the drop occurs. If the line is losing sync it is a Telkom issue. Been there done that - took 8 weeks and five faults logged before I got a great tech who somehow fixed it.

OK... thanks guys... I will try a hard reset and then I will try the other router!

It seems to have gotten worse overnight... it's disconnecting every few mins now.

Thanks

not sure if this helps but m situation was the same as pip's. took forever to fix. The problem was that where my line connects to the box on the street was very poor. The wires were stripped because they were so old and they were touching from time to time. Ask them to check it out for you.
