The Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) has developed an income comparison tool to show how income is distributed – from the poorest to the richest in the country.

“In four easy clicks, you can find out where you are in South Africa’s income distribution and how you compare to the rest of the population,” it said.

thechamp needs to read this the next time he tries to tell me that South Africans are ''coping''.

SALDRU’s research finds that 50% of South Africans are chronically poor. Only 20% of South Africans belong to the stable middle class, whilst 4% belong to the elite. The rest belong to the transient poor and the vulnerable middle class.

The middle class does not feel all that stable to me, or is stable-middle-class a reference to the upper middle class as a subcategory of the middle class. Still much better of than most in the country the way things are stratified.

Now I know.

What is crazy is that it doesn't, matter if I use just my own income or the combined income of me and my wife, its still the same... and definitely don't think we are rich.
 
55% of the country earns less than me. I am very blessed and grateful.

This. According to this tool we get an awesome salary.
According to the things we need to pay, it feels less so.

Yes
law of large numbers, that 5% is still ~3m people. It probably contains most of your peer group and almost everyone you'd interact with. As such it astounds me how many poor people there really are in SA.

Nope not me, I was just playing with the figures. I have a family of 5 and fall within the 90 to 95% group.
 
the amount of kids makes a difference, too many households have too many kids without enough reasonable income.

Or we want things that we see in the developed world but we don't have the income to support that lifestyle. Keeping up with the Jones', when we should reduce our aspirations slightly.

The pain part is if we were able to afford something in the past, but now can't anymore due to factors outside of our control (corruption, currency movements, macro factors like commodity cycles)

1% = 48K per capita net income. So, you are poorer than at least 3 myBB'ers
 
I don't see the problem.

The more kids you have the lower you drop on that graph, so solution to the poverty line is very simple "Use a bloody condom" <--- there problem solved.
