Friend's ADSL line conundrum

My friend asked for help as he is confused.. Telkom told him he can only get 2mbps as the website only says 2mbps to his premises. I got the same excuse from telkom about me getting 8mbps they told me I can only get 4mbps, I asked them to upgrade me anyway and I am getting what I asked for regardless of what the website says. I proved to a technician that my DSL sync status is good enough with the information I took from my modem! so I got the brilliant idea of taking my modem to my friend's house and his line is displaying a capability of 20Mbps.. what gives? should he try the same as I did or might there be some other obstacles in play?

If the stats (Noise Margin, Attenuation etc) look good, then I don't see any reason why your friend shouldn't be able to upgrade to a faster line. It's likely that Openserve has upgraded their infrastructure in the area, but Telkom haven't had the info updated on their systems yet.

I was in a similar situation with VDSL. Telkom told me VDSL wasn't available in my area, but Openserve's website showed that it was. I took a chance and applied for a VDSL line through AH, and it got activated with very little effort from my side.
