I am interested in the NeoFlex 5GB Package. I currently have an iBurst USB Modem and a 3GB package which is R469/month. So the Neotel 5GB package for R499 looks very enticing. Also the 8c/MB is a much better pricing than iBurst. Which works out to be R80/GB where think iBurst is R169.

I am a bit concerned about what I have read about the Neotel service and speeds on this forum.

Is it worth changing over to Neotel from iBurst?

One of the other reasons I want to change is I like how the NeoFlex modem has wireless and ethernet, so I can connect multiple machines. With the iBurst, I can only use the USB modem on one machine at a time. And I dont want to purchase the iBurst ethernet modem as I think it is like R3000.

I havent been that disappointed with iBurst's service. But would be interested in jumping ship to get more bandwidth, and the NeoFlex modem. I also like how it has a built in battery if the power goes down I can still use my laptop, and modem for internet access, which you would be able to do with the iBurst ethernet modem.

I don't want to go the Telkom route, so that is out of the equation.

Any help making the decision will be much appreciated.

I can't answer all your questions re: the battery...

But why exchange one evil for another?

IMO, if I only had a choice between Neoflex and iBurst, I'd rather go with none (jk, I'd stick with iBurst)

Do yourself a favor, check if you have Wimax coverage for the Telkom Wimax product and rather get Telkom Wimax (yes yes yes, Telkom is the enemy, lets boycott the enemy  )

With Telkom Wimax you can use any ADSL account you'd like. The unit plugs into any wireless/ethernet switch and you should be able to connect all your PC's wirelessly or with ethernet to the switch without any hassle, and each using their own (or same) ADSL accounts.

That way you get wireless connectivity (albeit a little slower) and cheap reliable bandwidth at the same time without having to purchase outrageous equipment upfront or having to sign a 24 month contract...

And, we all know Wimax can go faster than 512kbps, so it's only a matter of time when Telkom bumps up the speed and you'll know you'll get THAT speed. It also has (almost) the exact ping times that the normal ADSL service has AND you don't have to worry about WoW or gaming being crappy and laggy because it's as if you have an ADSL line.... think about it. Check out your options... and NO. Screamer/iBurst Wimax is NOT the same as Telkom's. The big difference is you get allocated a DSLAM like you would with a normal ADSL line, everything terminates as a normal ADSL line, except the last mile connection is wireless.

No mess no fuss. IP Address is the same as ADSL, speed and reliability is awesome. And it only costs R240 per month. Addon R199 for 5gb international and 20gb (or was that 15gb?) local. And you have a winner...

Oh I forgot to mention, Neotel disconnects your data line each time you receive a phonecall.... or make one...

Thanks AcidRaZor, that was very informative. I will check WIMax out

Disconnect

On Prime you will have about 30-40 secs before the internet will disconnect. Lite it will disconnect immediately.

I am looking at the NeoFlex, which has only data, not voice. So will this still be a problem?

My iBurst disconnects continously, so I am used to disconnections anyway

NeoConnect Lite doesn't disconnect immediately, sometimes I can take a call for a few minutes, end the call and resume internet activity without disconnecting.

On NeoConnect Lite and Prime your internet connection is suspended, not disconnected and are able to resume as before unless your connection idle time exceeded the timeout threshold on the particular server/site you were busy with.

Give Neoflex a try soundbase, if you have decent coverage and an uncongested tower your service should be good, but try test before signing yourself down in contract if possible. Results differ from user to user depending on their locality and level of congestion on their nearest tower.

On iBurst you don't get a fixed line phone at all, quite apart from the lousy Internet.

As has been pointed out, the phone on Neotel is only relevant with NeoConnect products (single line USB device built into a phone). NeoFlex is a standalone Internet-only router with multiple Ethernet ports and WiFi. If you use a fixed line regularly together with Internet, best would be to get a separate NeoConnect phone as well (R99 pm). Of course, you can always use Skype on NeoFlex (there's no shaping on Neotel).
