Anyone had any experiences with them and needing to return something. My 1TB Seagate just stopped working now, and after much time of figuring out why, i checked the back of the drive and noticed a charred smell around where the sata power cable plugs on.

Edit: Also had no power failures or power surges during the period of it working then just rolling over dead.

No hassles. They do sometime keep stuff to fully test it, but if obviously faulty they will replace. Ofcourse if it is due to negligence then not sure if they'll replace it. Just take it in and have them check it.

Will be testing this process again with a batch flash drives I bought at the same time last year and have all gone belly up.

Ok, but if it's a fried pcb board which im sure it is, won't they try cast it off as negligent even though it happened while in the pc?

I can't say. It's an issue between you and Frontosa that you'll have to sort out and agree on.

A few things if not a combination of them could have happened here.

1. Your SATA power cable has been over-used, pins are compressed and not making proper contact. This increases resistance. The current draw across it would increase heat and that could have melted the connector.
2. The drive itself was faulty and drew too much power, more than the connector or cable could sustain and this created the heat.
3. Perhaps your power rail's voltage was very low. To get the same power with lower voltage would probably mean drawing more current. Possibly more current than the connector could sustain.

I'd go back to them and just tell them the drive has failed and take it from there. I assume the drive is under warranty.

If it was perhaps your power supply voltages then other drives might have been showing the same issue. But that's if you have more than just the 1TB. Any issues there?
