Got my HTC Wildfire today. Before inserting a sim card, I connected to my wifi and checked for software updates. It found 2.2.1 and I downloaded and installed it. I'm surprised about this. Thought that the Wildfire is currently limited to 2.1 in South Africa

BAD move.

If you ever wanted to root/flash you just blew it

I'm on MTN. Phone from MTNSP. No sim has been put into the phone as yet.

I have no intention of rooting.

If you not interested in rooting, great little phone. Personally only fault I found is that the keyboard is a tad small for me :)

A day later, I might have changed my mind about rooting. Though now you say that I can't since my upgrade to 2.2.1.

Only problem I have is that I need to connect to a proxy server at campus in order to use the internet. I can't find anything that would allow me to do so without rooting.

Anyone have a non-rooting solution ?

OTA upgrade to 2.2. on wildfire overwrites the vulnerable hboot with a properly fixed one...as stated above, bad move.

now you know :-)

If it make any of you feel better I spoke out of experience. :(
