[RESOLVED] Frustrating anomaly on HP DX2000 PC

Hi

This is frustrating.

PC is a HP DX2000. It had an 80Gb IDE in which died recently.

1500Mb RAM is installed.

Installed an 160Gb IDE HDD, installed WindowsXP with SP3 and Office2007. Works well.

Runs Windowsupdate, reboot, and only thing that happens is a black screen with flashing cursor when trying to boot up in Windows.

Windows does NOT start up at all.

I also have tried grub4dos to replace the windows boot loader, but the same thing happens. And NTLDR is present and correct on the Windows partition.

I have already trolled this PC with Hiren's Boot CD, there is absolutely nothing wrong. MBR and boot sector is intact.

The BIOS is up to date.

Same thing happened to exactly the same PC (also a DX2000) but with 512Mb RAM.

Any ideas?

EDIT : Issue is resolved.

The recovery CD's that ship with this model cannot restore to a 160Gb NTFS partition. So I installed it as a 32Gb FAT partition, converted it to NTFS, then used gparted to expand this partition to 160Gb - and that's where my problems started.

When installing to a 32Gb FAT partition, and converting it to NTFS, and creating another partition on the leftover space, everything works as it should, no funny business.

Try a system restore to roll back to a date prior to the update. I've experienced a few BSODs with Windows XP in the past after updating drivers through Windows Update.

Windows will NOT boot.

Is there a way to perform an offline system restore?

Try the windows fix by booting from your Windows Xp CD. (Fixboot)
