FState Prison Confirms Hostage Situation

A hostage situation at the Mangaung Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein was confirmed by prison officials on Wednesday.

G4S Africa head Andy Baker said prison management was dealing with the incident, but did not give more detail.

He said contingency measures designed to deal with hostage situations had been put in place.

Earlier, a local radio station reported that four inmates took a female guard hostage on Wednesday morning.

If I have this correct (I usually don't) G4S is filling in for the striking workers and one of their employees is being held hostage by the inmates. Guess they aren't to dealing with this. 100 private security guards to fill in for 300 prison guards.

TBH 100 private security guards are probably better trained than 1,000 correctional services guards...

Hope G4S shuts down the hostage takers violently and efficiently.

Was thinking the same thing.

They could have used 10 cash-in-transit guys.... those guys know how to lay down the law.

I heard on 702 yesterday that Popcru said again their members were on strike because of previous issues and that G4S aren't competent and that's why this happened. This tells me it's a Correctional Services prison.

G4S, the company that runs the prison, has confirmed that hundreds of applicants have already been received for the posts.

It is a prison so the warders are members of POPCRU. The issue among others is that they fired some warders for going on an illegal strike.
