Hi

I can ping and traceroute to any ftp international mirror. But when i try to download a file the connection is initiated but the download will not begin, it just sits there at -.- K/s

Am i the only one with this, this happens on IS and SAIX.

Some local sites seem to be doing this to me as well, worked fine a month ago without any changes to my network.

Sounds like a firewall blocking the incoming connection.

When you connect to the FTP, an outgoing connection is made on a certain port, usually 21, and then the FTP tries to make another connection to you on a different port. When you're behind a firewall, this incoming connection is blocked and the download will not start.

If this is the problem, to get around this you have to setup your FTP download to run in "passive mode".

You might try to switch of Window Firewall temporarily while you do the FTP transfer. I found that when I try to upload files on my ADSL line, I need to do this. Otherwise I experience the same as you.

passive mode does not seem to be the problem as my downloader uses passive as default, firewall off on router and machine has no effect.
