I have recently setup Filezilla FTP server so my friend and i can share our files, however the speeds we are getting are terrible. Is there a way to improve the speeds. We both have telkom 4Mb lines and we are using MWEB as our ISP with thier new uncapped package.

All you can do is FTP only compressed files, there's nothing else that's going to improve the upload speed.

Have you guys tried running sftp as mweb may not be throttling sftp traffic?
May be worth a bash.
Alternatively setup your ftp server to listen for connections on port 80 or 443.

You are not allowed to host FTP,MAIL etc on those uncapped packages unless you take a businees package.

"The ADSL Service is intended for periodic, active use of the internet. You may not run a server in connection with the ADSL Services. You may not provide network services to others via the ADSL Services. In addition, you are prohibited from running servers for, including without limitation, mail, http, ftp, irc and multi-user interactive forums. You may not share your ADSL Services."

So no you will not get faster speeds, get a business package if you want that :)

What speed is "terrible speed"?

Remember that your 4mbps adsl line is 4mbps download and only 512kbps upload speed.

So max theoretical speed will be about 64KB/s where and real world speed will be closer to 55KB/s

Also keep in mind.. 4MB uncapped download yes... but FTP uses upload to send data to your friend.
So the max you will get i think is 500kbps / 60KB/s. Then add on top of that the AUP from Mweb (which mebe throttles it dead), and you have the deal of the century for FTP. :D

Sigh bullfrog beat me to it :P
