Hi,

Can someone please help me with this problem. I have my own website with Dreamhost and I'm trying to connect to it via FTP on filezilla. A few days back, it was working perfectly till today. I can't use the FTP anymore. Everytime I try to connect, filezilla displays this message.

Status: Resolving address of sinistra.dreamhost.com

Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

At first I thought it might the FTP server. But after testing it on other computers, it was only my computer giving this error. I tried different FTP clients and it would still not work. I also disabled my AV and firewall and re-installed filezilla but it didn't help.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks.

Had similar issues once a certain file count threshold is reached, but never bothered with a solution, just ssh'd instead. In to find a fix

Also tried SSH, didn't help. But I got it fixed. I have no idea how its related but I just restarted my router and everything is working again.

Maybe someone knows why??? :)

Hi Sebastian.s1994

Contact Dreamhost and inform them of the issue. Sounds like they havent allowed those passive ports on their firewall, or have not defined the correct passive port range on their ftp server.

@server-admins.net

I'm 100% sure everything is correct on their side because I tried using other computers on the same ADSL line and it worked, just not on my computer.

It seems that the problem is still not fixed. I have managed to get it working by disabling and enabling my LAN connection, but then it would only work for about 1-2 minutes.

I know its not Dreamhost or my ISP, its my pc. I just don't know why.

I have also been getting this error,
"530 Sorry, the maximum number of connections (10) for your host are already connected", and then each time I have to login to Dreamhost and kill all ftp connections before I can continue.

At the moment the easiest solution I can think of is just to re-install windows, which I really don't want to do. Please help!

If LIST of directory is timing out it means the recipient FTP server isn't setup for Passive FTP (or it's blocking all ports except 80,21 etc)

Switch your FileZilla (which I assume you're using) to Active connection for that specific host and try again. I'm sure it'll solve your problem

Okay, I changed it to Active connection and I got this error,

Status: Resolving address of sinistra.dreamhost.com
Status: Connecting to *********
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 530 Sorry, the maximum number of connections (10) for your host are already connected.
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

Then I logged into Dreamhost and killed all the ftp connections. I waited a while and tried again but got the same error.
Then I disabled my LAN and enabled it again and got this.

Status: Resolving address of sinistra.dreamhost.com
Status: Connecting to *********
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...

100% correct, if you're using Windows, try disabling your firewall as it may not be allowing filezilla to establish a connecting with your host on the passive ports.

hmmm, if you tested from another machine on the same network then it sounds like reinstalling is your only option - apart from installing a vm on your machine and testing connectivity from the vm.

:(

I have contacted Dreamhost again and sent them a link to this post. Maybe they know whats wrong. If not, I'm going to have to re-install windows and hope it works.

Thanks for the help anyway:)!!

Mac Pro = super sexy.

Good luck with the ftp issue

If lost still maybe try signing up for some free hosting with any isp out there and create a ftp login and see if it works there.
If it does you'll know for sure if it's the PC as you say or a server, connection issue.

Just an idea :)
