I have Telkom LTE internet and Telkom copper cabling for a switchboard for a small office and a small generator which supplies power to the office basics during load shedding. I have no complaints about general comms quality and speed of the internet.

But, It looks like when there is a general power failure in the area, the LTE tower goes down as as does the Telkom exchange leaving us with an obvious problem.

Question, if I install FTTH and VOIP phones, and with a generator at work, will my comms uptime improve - meaning is FTTH less susceptible to down time as a result of general power failures in the area?

Please advise?

I get you but does the fibre need electricity in local areas or only at the source meaning the provider?

Some fibre providers have battery backups to keep their exchanges running, some don't.

In essence I will be in a similar position ? Is that a fair interpretation of the feedback?

Pretty much, until you find out where that fibre terminates and if that exchange has generator backup.

Thank you.

The follow up would be to ask for user experiences in general - those who gave FTTH. Do you find your internet going down as a result of localized power outages? In my experience in Lonehill with Supersonic, I cannot recall FTTH down time as a result of load shedding.

Ask the fibre provider before you decide to provision. They will be able to tell you for your area.

I'm with Octotel and Cool Ideas at the moment in Cape Town and everything stays up if the router and ONT has power when the grid goes down.

I only have Telkom ADSL. When we had LoadShedding last year my inverter powered my router and I could still get on the net. However this year it would appear that Telkom is no longer providing power back up at their exchanges.
