Anyone else based in these areas with Telkom laying Fibre in your road? Would love to know more details i.e. order process, etc...
The new FTTH packages from Webafrica look excellent and are worth checking out. They use Telkom lines but offer you a far greater choice of data packages at much better prices.
I'm quite keen on a Webafrica package but let me check I'm not missing something.
Webafrica offer a free router as do telkom. So the data cost on Webafrica 60gb package (they don't offer 50gb) would be:
838pm + 72.88pm setup fee (1749/24 months) = 910.88pm. 910.88/60 = 15.18 per gb.
Telkom would be 999pm/50 (no setup fee) = 19.98 per gb.
Is this correct?
FTTH installed last Friday (20 March). Everything has been delivered by Telkom incl the Alcatel-Lucent device and router ...

While you wait, would you be able to post some photos of what the client-side part of the install looks like ?

Will send pic soonest. From the Telkom Manhole outside I had to install my own conduit to the home. The cable is as thin as you can imagine and breaks when you stare at it...
Inside the home is a 10 X 10cm box where the fibre terminates. From there is a pre-spliced 1.5m odd fibre cable that runs to an Alcatel device. This device connects to a WAN port router via regular Cat5 / Cat6 cable. This is also the device that keeps the FTTx connection up (or in my case not).
The cable really breaks easily... beware.

Interesting what you say about the fibre from the manhole to the indoor splicing box being so fragile. It sounds like the "in-residence" part of the fibre reticulation in your area is mostly underground ? This is quite different to what is happening in my area where the "last 10 yards" is going to be done in the air. One presumes the aerial fibre cable that goes from the poletop splicing box to the in-house splicing box will have to be a lot more robust.
